Wrong gear displayed?

On my 09 outlander 800 when its in park it says reverse and when its in low it says high all the rest are right. I was wondering whats wrong and if its covered under warranty? Thanks for the help

If it is still in the warranty time frame and you haven't moded the electronics it should be covered. Sounds like something is crossed to me.
It is a sensor problem. Can Am is having problems with poor sensor contacts on the '09 models. You can remove the plastic and take the sensor wires off, then clean them with a good spray cleaner, and put them back on real tight with a dielectric grease, and that will fix the problem. Or you can do what I did, and take it to the dealer, and have them putz around with it for a week and not fix it at all.

Mine Renegade's digital dash says the transmission is in high when it is in park, or says it is in low when it is in reverse, or neutral when it is in high, or any combination you can think of. The shift linkage works fine, and it is always in the correct gear indicated by the shift lever position, but the electronic display has no clue where the shift lever is really at. The only problem with this, is that when the dash display doesn't say neutral or park, it wont start. The solution for that is to just pull the rear brake lever, and then it will start in any gear. My digital dash will also frequently say "check engine - limp home mode", even when the ATV is obviously NOT in limp home mode, and it still runs like a raped ape.

That's some good feed back 3TV. My 09 800 has had none of the previously mentioned issues.
since the gear display is wrong i didnt know that the gear wasnt engaged fully so when i shifted from low to high it didnt change and i started driving and then it shifted and the gears GRINDED. how bad is that?

That plain sucks dude. It's prolly ok, but I wouldn't ride anymore until you resolve the issue. Just to be safe. I would strongly consider 3TV's advice. He's no rookie with quads and his advice can be taken to heart.
How do I know which wires are the sensor wires to take off and clean?

I can look at the wiring diagram in my manual when I get the chance if someone doesn't beat me to it.
This one didn't concern me mechanically as my first thought was a faulty sensor as 3TV said. But when you said "gears grinding", I pinched up.

How many miles and hours does it have and how old is it?

Let me pose this question to you. When it says reverse but it is actually in park and you give i9t some throttle, dopes it just rev as if it IS in park or does it try to move?

My initial thought after hyearing that gears are grinding is that either the linkage is mis-adjusted but it seems like that would effect all gears or that there is some play in the gear the linkage works that is cuasing it to not fully engage in some of the gears properly.

I doubt you hurt anything when the gears grinded if you were at really slow speed and very low RPMs but it is hard to say.

What about if you move it out of High just slightly towards neutral not not into the neutral slot, does it act as if it is still in high or does the transmission then disengage into neutral. If that actually keeps high engaged and the indicator functions right indicating high at that point, I might would try adjusting the linkage. Keep in mind that in doing this test, you will want to keep a stiff arm on the shifter so it can't flop gears on you to be safe. You don't want to tear something up testing. Obviously just barely ease on the throttle when testing this way.

It has just over 50 hours and just over 1000 km. When I rev it it doesnt try to move but u cant rev it that high unless u press the over ride button bc it says reverse so it has that rev limiter thing. I wasnt going that slow when it happened bc I wasnt sure if it was in low or high so I speed up to see (ya that was dumb) then when I let off the gas then it shifted into high and made a griding noise but it still works fine.
Dang man. This just plain bugs me. I think that could still be attributed to the sensor. The grinding most likely a result of the sensors malfunction. Anytime you shift while moving you're apt to get that grinding, whether the quad does it or you do it I guess. I'll try to get that sensor answer for you today. Promise.
