Hey guys, what do you use to clean up oil that has been spilled on your garage floor?

I made a gigantic mess today. I already used about a wheelbarrel full of kitty litter, but the garage floor is still oil stained. What can I use to get the concrete all nice and clean again? Thanks.

I use cat litter if I have it. If not, play sand works well. I rub it in good with a broom or my foot, let it sit for a day or so and sweep it up. I never even try to clean the puddle, I just pour the sand right to it.

Dpepending on how nasty the oil was, sometimes cleaning up the sand does the trick, other times it takes some degreaser and a broom to kinda wash it helps finish the clean.

Ok, here is the "oil stain" I am talking about.

Look under the Jeep and you can see where the concrete is stained from oil I spilled when changing the oil in the diesel truck. Two and a half gallons of oil spilled on the concrete floor! What a gigantic mess that was. Oil that has been in a diesel engine is as black as ink, even if it has only been in the engine for 3,000 miles, and it was probably the worst oil I could have possibly spilled on the floor.

I used the kitty litter, and it got most of the liquid oil off the floor, but left a slight residue of oil. I then used a product called "Drive Up" that I bought at Auto Zone. It is supposed to remove oil and grease from garage floors, and it did absolutely nothing. Don't buy the Drive Up product, it is a complete waste of money. I then used a small amount of gasoline and scrubbed the floor with a brush, and then hosed the garage out to get ride of the gas smell. Then I used Dawn dish soap and scrubbed the floor again with a brush, and then hosed the garage out again. That was about ten hours ago and the floor is now dry, and has no oil on the floor that I can feel, but the concrete looks like it is permanently stained. Is there any way to remove that stain?

In my honest opinion, judging by the gravity of the situation it may be impossible to get the stain out. As a last resort, you most likely will need to attack the stain with another petroleum based solvent. I have used WD-40 on other types of oil stains. WD-40 is a solvent based penetrant. You may give that a little try on a small spot.

Based on the size of that spill, I might would attack it with some type of acid. Locally I can get a gallon of wheel and grill acid concentrate for about $20 and it works like a champ. Let it sit for about 2 minutes, skeet it with a water hose and you're clean as a whistle.

my brother always use to use a bag of dry cement you get from the hardware store, He would pour it on like kitty litter and leave it for a day or 2 then sweep it off with a course brush, I never tried it but his drive way looked great.
I had a company paint my garage floor with that epoxy paint and now I can leave oil there for weeks and wipe it up with a rag.. best garage upgrade there is..
Try the dry cement, it's cheap and it works..

I can't see an oil spill all I see is the nose of a Dodge Challenger. More pics please!

As for the oil spil, when I've spilled small amount I always spot cleaned with brake cleaner. For that spill, maybe try some Castrol Super Clean.

Oh yeah in case I haven't asked. More pics of the Challenger please!

Was your garage floor sealed 3TV? I've yet to seal my new garage floor and I spilled some oil/gas on it recently... I've been a little disabled over the past month (ACL surgery) but now that I can walk around again, I need to get out there and clean things up and get to work on sealing and epoxying my floor.

The garage floor was never sealed, which is the reason the oil stained the cement so badly. Since I posted this thread I have tried several more solvents to remove the oil stain. I tried kerosene, several brands of engine degreaser, and a product called krud kutter that I bought at home depot. The stain has faded slightly but is still there. I think the stain is permanent at this point. Any future homes that I move into are going to have the garage floor sealed with an epoxy paint before I even move in.

As for the Challenger, ... BAD ass car! Power like you wouldn't believe, great handling, drifts like a dream, and has gotten as good as 23.5 mpg on the highway on the rare occaision that I drive it responsibly. I have a new set of wheels and a fat sticky set of rear tires that are going on tomorrow or monday at the latest. I'll take some pictures after the new wheels and tires are on.

That SRT10 is sweet, I've seen other pictures of it from the SEMA show. I wonder how much more front end heavy the V-10 would be though.

The 6.1 Hemi SRT8 is real nice though. Seriously, Hebs, if you are considering buying a Challenger, then do it! This car is the highest quality automobile I've ever owned in my whole life. Everything about the car is of great quality, from the way the trick HID headlights light up the road at night, to the sound of the engine and exhaust, to the perfect quietness of the cabin that has absolutely zero wind noise, even at 100 mph on the interstate. Even the 13 speaker stereo is so nice it sounds and feels like you're driving a 425 hp jukebox on wheels.

Oh don't get me wrong 3TV... I've been looking at it for a while... I've wanted it since they started talking about them in 06. Have you topped it out yet? If so, what did you get it to?

I will have one, I just don't know how long I'll wait before I get it...

I haven't topped it out yet.

There is a video on YouTube of a stock SRT Challenger going 167 on the Autostrada in Italy.

yeah... but is that with the governer removed? Isn't the US standard is either 156 or 158? I wouldn't expect it to go over that, but I was just curious what the set the governer at in the US model...

There was a program on SpeedVision where Jay Leno took his stock Challenger SRT8 to the Bonneville Salt Flats to see what top speed was. It topped out at 170 on radar.
