I guess I am one of the select few who do not like the lines of any of the Hummers.

If you ask me (I know, nobody did) GM has ruined the Hummer. They took a no frills, strong, offroad capable macnine and made it into another high end yuppy vehicle. The majority of the Hummers I see have never touched dirt and their drivers would put their face in their hands and cry if it ever did. Why would you take a great high clearance suspension and replace it with a ground dragging straight axle? It still rides like a lumber wagon. Maybe they should lower it 7 inches more and put a car suspension under it and target the grocery getter market like they did with the 1500. A V6 in that tank, will it even pull itself?
OK, sorry for the rant. I guess I favor function over form.

Buying this is really no different than buying any suv, or truck IMO. I can't argue that GM watered down the Hummer name either. But 99% of jeep owners don't offroad their jeeps either. Straigh axles are also the favored choice of avid offroaders.

So very true! It is amazing how the only brown most SUVs and trucks have seen is a grocery sack.

Straight axles perched on an elaborate suspension.  I think the weakness of CV joints and fear of bending axles are the main reason for this, agree?  We all realize the benefits of independant on our 4 wheelers for said driving.

CV joint are definately the biggest contributing weakness. Depends on the offroading for what type of suspension. For desert running I don't think you could beat an independent setup. But for slow rock crawling, I think straight axles are the most appropriate. Articulation is key when crawling huge rocks. The upward travel of a tire over a rock forces the other side down keeping you planted. Comfort is they key elemet of idependent suspension. Not to mention we just don't run tires large enough like full size's to overcome the negative traits of a straight axle on quads.
