Well after confirming it with my dealer the following post is true.

Anyone that has a 2009 or 2010 Sportsman XP needs to check to see if it was built between Jan 2009 and August 2009. If it is you need to take it in to get the ball joint bolts replaced, as they were installed with the incorrect bolt size.

The CPSC link is below.

I have two friends who took their Polaris machines (1-850 XP & 1-550) for this work to two different dealers.

One dealer just "LOOKED" at the guys ball joints (on the 850) & told him he didn't have any problems

The other dealer changed everything without question (on the 550). :cheer:

I told my buddy with the 850, I'd take it back & tell the dealer you wanted all the parts changed. For one reason, from what I've heard, Polaris sends out a "Kit" with all the parts to be changed out ... so .... 8)

Anyway, that's what I'd do. Be interesting to see what some of the members here are told by their dealers. :eek:ccasion14:

Well at least Polaris acknowledged it. I know on the first year of the Yamaha Grizzly, they had ball joint problems as well as issues with the vent line in the fuel tank. Took them a full year to acknowledge the fuel thing. They never did issue a recall about the ball joints. A local dealer said when they were working on mine that they had a lot of machines come it with the same problem.

At least with the two recalls on the XP so far they have addressed mine quickly after the parts arrive. It's too cold for me to be riding now anyways.

It's sad that someone has to get hurt before manufactures own up to mistakes.

It's just like that Toyota gas pedal issue on the news lately. First it's a non issue, then it's the floor mats, now it's a massive recall on a ton of cars and it only took five years to sort it all out.

I called my dealer about the recall. He ran my VIN and said my unit was affected. Basically, what I was told that it's a safety recall and if you have an affected VIN, the parts are replaced. The kits include new ball joints, steering knuckles with new wheel bearing installed and all new mounting hardware. Relatively easy job - mine was done in about an hour. What I have heard is there were fit issues between the steering knuckle and ball joint studs. The stud would actually work/move where it is clamped into the knuckle and could eventually break off.
