I changed the oil early this a.m in the big bear . I have a strong suspicion the dealership did not clean out the oil filter or have the side off by the amount of metal filings I found lodged in it when they did the required first service for their warranty .

You see our dealership gives an extended warranty to buyers that goes for two years which is beyond the Yamaha standard from factory of 6 months . In order to get this they require to do the first one but for $285 . I think it was not done complete .

The one bolt of the oil filter cover is a tad of a chore to get in and out with an allen key . I didn't know they now use an oil filter you just clean . Is this now the standard for all yamaha's or is this unique to my model . I thought my other bikes I just bought a new oil filter and just changed it not this cleaning like I found on the bear . Maybe I'm mistaken . :dontknow:

I'm going to drain the final drive and differential oil too just incase they didn't do that either although I paid for it .

Will there be filings in the differential and final drive too if they did or didn't change it .

Should there have been what I call a fair amount of filings in the big bear's oil and filter like I found after the first service ?. I'm not here to bash dealers but would like to know from those who actually do the work themselves .

The oil I run in the bear is 0w-40 amsoil and what I requested for the service .

Thanks for your help in advance .

TD,

Depending on the amount of filings you have I would not be to alarmed. However I personally feel they should have been flushed after the first service. ???

As far as the "serviceable" type oil filter goes, had no idea they were still using that technology :dontknow:. Many ATV's today have spin on oil filters like your car or truck. My lawn mower even has a spin on filter.

Thanks for the feedback Grizzly Wizard . That oil filter tech blew my mind too . Seems odd but aslong as it works and does its job I guess it's alright . ::)

I got the final drive oil changed to and then did the differential . I found an allen key is needed to undo the differential drain while the final drive was a regular bolt . I don't understand that tech either . Why have the drain and filler as bolts on the final drive and a bolt on the filler on the differential yet an allen key bolt for a drain ?. Too many tools to dig through just to do a service . I don't mind changing sockets but an allen keyed bolt . ??? ::) I'll be doing a few changes in bolts to make things easier and simplistic in the future .

I did get a good chuckle though when I went and bought the gear oil . The yamaha dealer didn't have any so I went to the Honda dealer who I knew from a previous visit had a good supply of oils etc. The Honda dealer said their gear oil is one and the same as Yamaha's . I said to him jokingly about not being sure about running honda fluids in a yamaha . He took the gear oil jug and scratched out the Honda word and wrote Yamaha on it then said that it would be a dollar more sir . LOL
