I wanted to tell everyone a little bit about a camera setup that I have been testing for a month or so from Xtreme Recall. It has been that long simply because of me testing and playing trying to get the optimal setup for video footage for my riding application and building on this system with the advice of the Xtreme Recall folks. Thank goodness for their patience with me as I am a tough one to work with.

Their system is an expandable cam system in so many ways, it is amazing and I am not gonna go into much detail here until I give you a full write-up. I will say you can do about anything you want with it including adding multiple cams, audio devices, extension cables, handlebar mount power on an off buttons, as well as switches to flip between multiple cams on the fly. All I can say is "IMPRESSIVE" from every aspect including expandability, sound quality ( which is rare in cam systems), durability, image clarity, and IMAGE STABILIZATION. Yep, I said it, they have image stabilization technology built into their cams. They even build cams specifically for the military as tactical cams for helmets. They do it all. I had a GoPro and this is like comparing a pocket size point and shoot to a high end SLR cam. For camera folks, you know what I mean.

I'm attaching a few pics of my final setup and will gets some videos ripped down this weekend for you to see as some samples. This final setup of mine has really taken some playing and tweaking on my part to get a configuration that is easy to work with, provides good footage and doesn't restrain me as the rider at all.

Here are the prelim pics of the mounting I have gotten to as MY optimal setup.

Damn this is a nice setup!

Here's a video I put on vimeo from this cam setup. I have another one that is from a trail ride by my house but don't have it uploaded yet. It is quite large.

My lens was nasty during that ride and I wasn't aware of it. A problem with the GoPro is the audio absolutely sux, the menu system sux and wearing gloves, with it mounted on top of your helmet, it is impossible to know if you are powered on or not and if you have it recording or not. We have missed a lot of rides using go-pros because either we thought we pushed the record button well enough and it never started recording, or it would just power off mid-record, even with fully charged batteries.

The go-pro is a decent camera if you plan to overlay an audio track onto the video since you won't get any useful audio recorded from it, and if you budget is limited. That is the problem with most cameras is that the audio quality is so foul, everyone has to put music over the video to cover the poor sound quality.

Honestly, when watching ATVing videos, i prefer to here the vehicle and hear the folks talking rather than music that I may or may not like.

Also keep in mind that the reason you are seeing a poorer quality video is due to the videos encryption. It is my understanding that the Xtreme Recall records to an external device onto tape. For those who are new new videography standards, recording to tape looses the least amount of A/V quality. You are probably saying..."but all the new cams are HD fo Hybrid HD types. True, but to get and hours worth of true High Rez video on a hard drive requires compression which in turn lowers quality. Now back to the encryption, this video has lost probably better than 35% of it's original quality due to Vimeos FLV encryption and rendering so that you may stream it so easily over the internet.

This system has extremely good sound quality, almost too good as during playback I am hearing some overmodulation which is overdriving my laptop speakers and causing distortion. Is there a way to turn down the mic's sensitivity, and it the mic being recorded from and external device or does the cam have a built in microphone.?

I also like the fact that you can switch between different camera view so easily on the fly. This saves a lot of time in post production,

Looks great B!

That is a nice camera setup and the quality seems to be as good as my Go-Pro but the sound is better than the Go-Pro. I hate the sound recordings of the Go-Pro.

Here's another one I did that is 6 minutes long. This one has 3 sections to it. a slow speed trail ride, then it moves into a bit faster paced so you can really get a feel for the speed the way I have it mounted, then the final portion is me hitting a small jump 2 times, one with the front camera on and the other with the rear camera. Bits and pieces of the first two sections also have footage using the rear cam.

It is amazing to me with this system with it mounted to the quad and riding on rough trails or jumping how good the image stabilization is.

It sux that Youtube downgrades it so much and that there isn't some aleranative other than having our own streaming video server.

Anyway, here it is:

Keep in mind, if you render your videos in 640 x 480 you can upload it to Youtube and give users the option of watching it in HD. You will have to keep close eye on the video size, and possibly make it smaller. I try to always render my videos in FLV and upload them to youtube. This way they are compressed in a good format and the size of a 10 min. video is usually withing Youtubes limits.

The stabilization is pretty good on that thing but as Mack mentioned earlier the Contour Hd 720p crushes it in Vid quality. I see you dont like music in the video but I love music as much as I do riding so I have to put music in my videos. Here is a few from youtube to compare. I will put up a test vid to show audio quality which is okay until you hit about 45 mph then it just turns to wind noise. Be sure to watch it in HD though. Also all my videos are at real speed.
