New Tires for my 09 BF650I

Hi Everyone,

I am new to the site and have a question, that I am sure has been asked many times.

My 09 BF is about ready for a new set of sneakers and I am curious what the popular opinion is on putting larger tires than the stock size. I was thinking about going with either a Mud Lite XL or a Big Horn and wanted to go to a 26" (stocks are 25") to get more ground clearance.

Is it a good idea to go to the larger rubber on the same rim and if not what kind of problems does it generally cause?

Thanks in advance for the help!

You will probably need to think about swapping out the wheels or adding wheel spacers. Reason I say this is you may experience some rubbing on the inside which aftermarket wheels or spacers will remedy by giving you an additional offset and wider stance.

Thanks for the reply Grizzlywizard.

I was hoping to not have to add the expense of new wheels. I find the bike a bit low when riding on rocky terrain and that's the main idea behind the larger tires. I have read a bit about the wheel spacers and it sounds like there other handling advantages as well so that may be the way to go.

Does anyone have experience with GBC Dirt Devils?? about half of my riding is winter with snow (mostly groomed trails). Any opinions on good tires for winter riding?

The Dirt Devils are great tires and will give you some very high mileage. The tread pattern works very well in every terrain.
25" bighorns will tower over your stock 25" tires. They measure as a 26".

I'd run those if I were you. Just my $.02.
Thanks Koko. Big Horns have an excellent reputation but based on the tread pattern I question what they are like in mud. I have a hard time passing a mud-hole without taking a run at it :)

On another topic, (I apologize if this is the wrong thread for this) does anyone else find the rear A-arm/axle skid plates on a brute collect a ridiculous amount of mud or especially ice when hitting partially frozen holes?? I am constantly having to clean out clumps of debris as well ice will sometimes twist my rubber boot guards.

I have been considering removing the plates but not sure that's a great idea!

Anyone else have the same issue??

Jay
The Bighorns are great tires. And please don't flame me cause they are site sponsors, but I really like the performance of the Pit Bull Growles. I am also testing the Rocker tires from Pit Bull currently. I won't spill the beans, but we decided to try something different and run these tires under a year torture test. Simply put, they are living up to the Pit Bull name.
If you hit mudholes (i drive around them) then possibly the bighorns may not be what you're looking for. They're fine for normal mud conditions like racers see in gncc racing but if you want bogging type tires there's other options.
You can't really compare the mudlite to the horns as they are designed for far different terrains.

I have experience with Mudlite XTRs, GBC Dirt Commanders, GBC Spartacus and the ITP Terracross R/T tires. I loved the XTRs but they didn't drift in a fast turn at all. Seemed fairly durable for me as I never punctured one but I have heard of people complaining of poking them.

The Terras drift well and do well in all terrains for me except for sand. That was the same for the GBC Dirt Commanders.

The Spartacus tires to me drift well and hook up great in everything. Never had a puncture problem with them at all. I think they are my favorites between the group I mentioned.

That's my input.

Well I am a bit confused now.... I was into a local Cat dealer (in my defense they used to be a Kawi dealer and their prices are way better than the current Kawi dealer) and I was talking to one of the sales guys that has been there forever and he has the identical bike I have so I asked him what he runs for tires. He is running Zillas and Big Horns both 26". So naturally I asked about wheel spacers/lifts etc. and he said he has not had to use mods with the tires and he does not get any rubbing.

He recommended I buy Bighorns as he feels that they wear incredibly well and they all around they are good in snow, mud and dirt. He also really likes Dirt Devils a lot.

Oh I wanted to tell you guys I picked up a molded fiberglass stereo box that connects to the front rack. It is designed to house your amp and/or CD deck and speakers. There is enough space for 4" or 4x6" speakers. The only trick was that he had them on clearance because they were odd colors so I will have to paint it once I get my gear installed. I will be sure to post pics once I get it running!!!

Cool deal. Good to hear you wont get any rubbing. I like the Bighorns too.

And trail tunes, let the party begin!
Pirelli MudWeisers?

Ok.

I found a guy selling some Pirelli Mudweisers that seem to be almost new.

Anyone know anything about this tire or have an opinion??

They are 26" (12" rim) and he is asking $200.00 for the set so I figure I can get them for maybe 150-175 because he seems pretty motivated.

Let me know what you all think!

Jay

PS: took the day off work tomorrow, planning a run, fresh snow, guys only.... should be sweet.
