Out of curiosity, what are some of your must haves that you take every time you ride, without fail. These would be items that if you left home without them, you would be unhappy. They could be any common item or something you feel you need in cases of emergency or for survival.

Here are some things I make sure my toolbox always has:

Cell phone;
GPS;
Drinks;
Flashlight;
Lighter;
Large knife;
Miniature air compressor;
Spare Spark plug and wrench;
10mm socket and ratchet as well as a 10mm wrench;
pliars;
allen wrench combo set;
firearm;
rope;
and a ratchet strap or two.

I think that covers my must haves. What are yours?

"A laptop with a bullet hole in it is useless, a map with a bullet hole in it is still a map."

That quote stands to reason for all technology. If you are depending on that GPS to get you off the mountian and it breaks, what do you do? Of course even the map is not much use if you don't know how to use it. Just food for thought.

And navigating in the mountains of S. WVa with only a GPS sometimes is impossible.

I seldom use a GPS to get where I want to go, unless I have been there before, and marked it.
But I always use my GPS to get back to camp...
I carry a map
GPS
H&K45c
pump
tire repair kit
GI shovel
water
tool bag

assortment of zipties
duct tape
couple bungee cords
folding (pruning) saw
SA XD40 w/ half a mag of CCI shotshells for snakes, half a mag JHP for ...
leather work gloves (tired of tearing up my riding gloves doing "trail maint.")
couple ziplock bags (BTW, TP is in ziplock)
10,000 plugs for my ITPs

I love it! :rotfl:

How tough is it to change the belt on those things. I know with the Kawi it helps to have a clutch puller.
not hard at all. i think there are around six or eight 10mm bolts on the cvt cover, then you thread a M8 X 1.5 bolt (around 3-4 inches long) into the secondary clutch to spread the sheaves. old belt comes off, new belt goes on. remove bolt and replace cover. could probably do it in under 5 min, if there was a beer bet!

Wow! That is easy. I have been watching ebay for a cheap aftermarket to carry around for long trips. At least a cheapy could get you home in the event of a failure. Then I could replace with an OEM.

yeah, me too. there was a guy selling a goodyear gatorback for $45 over at ..... that forum where there's alot of a-holes, but i figure i'll just get an oem, eventually. problem is, from what i hear there's a "shelf life" on belts. never heard of that in the automotive world, but supposedly there's a higher failure rate, depending on the date of manufacture. i'm sure it also doesn't help to have it bouncing around with all my crap on the trails either!

btw, i put 25 HARD miles on today - the cvt snorkels held up perfect, as did my custom gps mount i made this weekend. however, i tore another cv boot. :protest: next up is fabricating some invincible cv guards and a full skid out of some HDPE. i was planning on riding for a few more hours until i noticed the boot. :crybaby2:

For the belt; could it be coated in some sort of lubricant (non-degrading type) and placed in some sort of large vacuum seal bag to maintain the life of it? That could be a quack idea :dontknow:
