I have been doing some thinking about loud exhaust. I have heard everything in every forum about this exhaust and that exhaust. This one is loud this one produces more Horse power.
I even have a sticker that says if it is too loud then you are to old. I myself like loud exhaust always have. My truck had loud pipes and I was in trouble all the time. The question to everyone is if you could purchase an exhaust full system or slip on that would add we'll say 10 to 15 horse power but it was 96db or above would you buy it? Price is not a factor as I am finding out about noise.

If an aftermarket exhaust really made an extra 10 to 15 horsepower then you bet I would put up with 96+ dB. The problem is, aftermarket exhaust typically make an extra 2 to 3 hp, which is barely noticeable, and they typically make about 99 to 102 dB, not just 96 dB.

I've put aftermarket exhaust on every dirt bike I've had, simply because a spark arrestor is required for the desert racing series around here. They do a tech inspection before and after every race, and if you don't have a spark arrestor (like the stock dirt bike exhaust doesn't) you won't race. I really like Pro Circuit exhaust the best on dirt bikes, and they are absolutely no louder than the stock MX dirt bike exhaust. I've put aftermarket exhaust on several sport quads. And I've put aftermarket exhaust on a few utility quads, and we have a Yoshimura exhaust on our Rhino. So I guess the answer to your question whether or not I would put up with more noise to gain horsepower, is yes. I would certainly prefer it to be the way you stated your question though, ... where you gain 10 to 15 hp, and sound output is only 96 dB. If they could really do that it would be great.

I have been going over and over this and just like battlegun said I love the loud heck if I could stand 150 db I would run it myself. I think some people think loud means power but if it sounded good and loud and didn't gain much or any hp then I would like it as well. Thanks for your input. I would like to hear from as many as possible.

As 3TV just said, you are never going to get 10-15 HP out of an ATV exhaust. You would be very luck to squeeze out 5 best. The kind of HP numbers you are looking for are going to need to come in the form of more cubic inches. And that being said....good luck.

As far as noise is concerned. I just finished riding this past weekend in the H&M area of S. WV. The exhaust I am running now had been tested with my db meter and it reads at 99 db @ 3000 RPM's. and 91 at idle (1600 RPM's). After our 90 mile enduro on Friday, and the same on Saturday I must say the exhaust noise started to wear on me at the end of each day. However if you want performance you gotta pay. If you are just going to put around and puddle jump then the louder exhausts may be the way to go. But if you are going to ride them like we do then I would lean to the more conservative side of the noise level.

The wife and I (and our two weener dogs) went for a forty mile ride in the Rhino this morning, just doing some exploring in the desert west of where we live. The Yoshimura exhaust on that Rhino gets pretty annoying. No way can my wife and I talk to each other when we are riding in the Rhino. Even yelling at each other we miss what the other one is saying half the time. I wish the aftermarket could make a better performing exhaust that is only about 10 dB louder than stock (92 dB vs 82 dB).

As for the 150 dB exhaust, ... I haven't had one quite that loud, LOL. I did have a DS 650 with a full HMF exhaust on it that was tested on a sound meter though. At wide open throttle it peaked at 135 dB. It was so lound that you could feel the ground shake when you were standing next to it and someone wrapped the throttle wide open. I wore ear plugs when desert racing that ATV, otherwise I was deaf for a few days after each race. I will say that I never had to worry about the person I had caught, and was trying to pass, not knowing I was behind them. Sometimes they would just move over. I had one person tell me me after a race that he thought there was a buggy or a trophy truck behind him, and he was just getting the heck out of the way. LOL.

I'm really look forward to Grizzlywizards review of the HMF swampseries. It's my first aftermarket exhaust and I couldn't be happier. Noticeable gains in performance with a far from loud sound output.

Do you need to use the silly looking snorkel thing on the HMF exhaust to get the low sound level? Or is it still reasonably quiet without the snorkel thing? I'm still trying to decide what to do for exhaust on the Grizzly. I may just go with the 2R exhaust tip this time.

3TV I am not sure either. Koko can answer that question better as I have not even got the stock in my hands yet. Is the UPS man on strike????

Anyway, As soon as I finish testing the TBR I am going to be focusing on another system. Then I will most likely get to the swamp series and Penland Pro.

3tv, you don't have use the snorkel thanfully. You 4 choices, open exhaust with only the tip, tip with a sparkarrestor, tip with quiet core and sparkarrestor, and tip with snorkel and spark arrestor.

I'm only running the exhaust with the tip and sparkarrestor. Click this link for a my writeup and a couple of poor sound clips.

Thanks for the review. Yours sounds perfect! Why does Gearslayers sound louder though? Is he not running the spark arrestor, and you are running it?

The ultimate test for me is my wife. She didn't notice anything different. :laughing7: But honestly, a few guys here have heard my bike (Thom, Scott, Glenn). They all agree it's barely noticeable as an aftermarket pipe. I"m not sure why gearslayers sounds louder...because I actually bought the pipe from him. the one he's running in that vid is the exact one on my bike. I only made my vid with my digital camera. I'm running no quiet core, just a spare arrestor.

Is Gearslayers Grizzly running a higher compression piston, or a different cam? Maybe that is why the exhaust sounds louder on his Grizzly.
