At ATV Torture, we do quite a bit of testing of performance aftermarket ATV products. Some of these products effect the way the quad runs as far as air/fuel ratio is concerned. Some products may result in the quad running rich while others may result in lean conditions. Additionally, we may just want to dial-in the electronic fuel injection on our machines in for optimum performance.
So, to be able to help us do that, we turned to Innovate Motorsports, considered to be the best in the business for air/fuel ratio meters and gauges. Not exactly designed for a 4-wheeler at all, we still needed the product for optimum tuning.
* NOTE: To clarify, you cannot actually tune your fuel injection system with an air/fuel ratio meter itself b/c it cannot control your fuel injection. However, you can use it to test your current configuration so you can tune your EFI with an aftermarket product like a fuel controller.
The way an air/fuel ratio meter or gauge works is by reading the "air/fuel ratio" via an Oxygen Sensor, otherwise known as an 02 sensor, that is welded into your exhaust. Now this is not a permanent attachment as provided with the 02 sensor is a bung, that is a round threaded piece. This is what is actually welded to the exhaust, and the 02 sensor threads into that. When you decide you want to remove the sensor, you simply thread a "plug" into the hole in the bung where the 02 sensor was, and the hole is sealed off.
Therefore, for our applications, we simply remove our exhaust pipe from the quad and welded a bung into it in the proper location that was sure to protect it from damage.
By using the Innovate Motorsports LM-2, we have been able to save our log file from the LM-2 to the built-in memory card. From there, we can extract the data from the memory card in a graphical and / or tabular format. This then shows us air/fuel reading throughout the entire RPM range that was recorded during our test runs.

Installation of the LM-2 is relatively simple. Complete documentation is supplied, and the support pages, user forum, videos, application notes and tuner resources can also speed you on your way to effective tuning. Innovate also has a great network of local dealers, tuners, race shops, and dyno shops that can assist you in choosing, installing, and getting the most out of your Innovate products. Overall impression:
By using the Innovate Motorsports LM-2, we have been able to save our log file from the LM-2 to the built-in memory card. From there, we can extract the data from the memory card in a graphical and / or tabular format. This then shows us air/fuel reading throughout the entire RPM range that was recorded during our test runs.
The LM-2 is an extremely nice unit for anyone that needs to be able to accurately read air/fuel ratios for a custom tune to a fuel powered vehicle of any type. Although our application is not typical for what Innovate was used to, we were able to successfully modify our test quads and retrofit the Innovate Motorsports LM-2 to it.
The LM-2 is a vastly different design from the older model LM-1 that it replaced and it saw a lot of improvements that were badly needed in the motorsports industry. A major improvement of the LM-2 over the LM-1 is that the LM-1 did not come with a means by which to read RPMs without having to purchase an accesory for around $100. However, the LM-2 comes standarad with this built in to it. Additionally, the LM-1 did not have a memory card installed in it so each time you made test runs and needed to analyze the data, you had to disconnect the unit itself and take it to your computer and plug it up. The ability to simply remove the memory card is great for someone like us that may have to actually mount the LM-2 to their test machine.
Overall, we've been extremely happy with the Innovate Motrsports LM-2 digital air/fuel ratio meter.
