Hey guys I just bought an HMF used from a guy...he said there was only 100-200km on the pipe...I believe him cause the pipe looks new...anyway there is a rattle coming from inside the pipe..any of you have experience with this or know how to fix it??

I would drill out the rivets and remove the inner core. The culprit should be more forthcoming then.

Is that a Swamp Series exhaust?

HMF oltd him it needed to be repacked and he needed to send it to them. After shipping and all, that was gonna cost $80 canadian. Since a bag of repack stuff is about $10-12 on ebnay shipped, I'd be having to drill the rivers, buy a bag and finding some way to reassemble, even if I had to tap the holes and put bolts in place of the rivets.

Sorry guys I was away for the weekend I didnt see the post till now...

yeah HMF said it has to be repacked...and I cant find any repacking kits on ebay...and HMF wants $35 plus $20 shipping to send me the repacking kit with rivets...

so I will end up doing it myself just not sure what way im going to go with...

dont know why it needs repacking already...the guy bought it from only had about 100-200km on it and never got it wet he told me...but maybe just from washing the quad or what ever...

I replied to this post a while back....but it's no where to be seen now. :wtf:

My advice was that the rivets and packing were the cause and that I had read about this somewhere else in a another post. I hate to say it but that's why I'd prefer to just buy new. That way if there is any issues it's on the manufacturer. And in this case you prolly didn't save that much after replacing the packing. Not to mention the heart burn associated with it.

And I believe washing in coorperation with not ever running the quad hot enough to burn all the condensation out is enough to contribute to packing deteration.

I'm sorry this happened to one of our members, but hopefully everything comes out in the wash and no money is lost (cost of used muffler + repacking = less than new muffler).

yeah by the time I spend the money on the packing I still would have saved about $50-$80 CND from new...but that is not really enough to justify it...

but oh well...I could have bought new and then in 100km this happen anyway then I would have been out $50-$80 more again...

who knows...

Oh well...Ill leave it untill it gets really bad...

Yeah, sounds like re packing is the way to roll. They are easy to repack, just get a rivet gun, some muffler re-packing at you local dealer. Drill out the rivets, pull the core out, re-wrap as tight as you can get it. Once satisfied, re-install the core with the new packing and re-install new rivets.

Took me about an hour.
