I'd go with an actual exhaust before I went with a CDI on the 660. I think the big allure for a CDI is on the 700 Grizz to cure an inherent timing issue that causes a midrange "miss" that becomes more noticeable when you mod the engine.
There shall be no piping. How would a CDI hurt? Not flaming, I'm seriously dumb to this.
I don't think a CDI would hurt you at all. But in terms of a performance "bang for the buck" a pipe will get you there. there's a couple aftermarket pipes that are not very loud. I never added one because of how loud they were, until HMF came out with the swamp series. I don't even have to run a quiet core. The best test is my wife, she didn't even notice a difference.
AHHH you have my attention. Grasshopper learn fast! Teach me more of these quiet performance exhausts? I was under the impression that all aftermarket quad exhaust would be similiar to the guys in my neighborhood that I curse about once a week. I DO NOT WANT LOUD. I purchased the tip because I wanted it to sound a bit deeper, but not gain much noise. This could change EVERYTHING.

Sarge, I too did not want loud on my Grizz since I live in a neighborhood. After installing the tip and seeing how much it changed the sound, i just didn't want to go louder. however, i wanted more power. I found that HMF offered a quiet core for their pipes for an additional $20 but I was still concerned. I then found LRD that provided a quiet core insert with their's and even without teh QC, the LRD was suppose to be quieter than the HMF on paper.

I ordered the LRD. I don't have the quiet core thingy in it and it's ok for me. Idling around or doing yard work, it's not bad. Now, if you jump on the throttle, it's a hole new game. I haven't tried it with the insert in it b/c it's not an abnoxious oloudness like a 2-stroke bike even when I'm in the gas hard.

GrizzlyWizard tested my pipe before I even got it so he could build me a controller program for it. He also said he thought it was quieter than the HMF.

Here's the info on it from LRD. I actually got mine off of eBay for a much better price. Here's one on ebay. Very nicely made pipe.

DANG THESE SITES! :cussing: LOL. I was completely happy without a pipe and one question about a CDI and now look at me!

What are your opinions on this (LRD) for a carbed quad?
Interesting side note: When I got the LRD exhaust in, and since I have a Benz Silent Rider ATV stealth exhaust system, I decided to see if I could get them to work together. Would you believe that the Benz Silent Rider slides nicely right inside the tip of the LRD for a perfect fit, and is actually quieter than the Benz Silent Rider was on my factory exhaust. HOLY CRAP!

The LRD Was my first choice before the swamp series came along. I got a deal on teh swamp series and went with it. No regrets but the LRD is a very good option
I don't like you guys anymore. Now I want an exhaust! :sad2: On a serious note, the video from Gearslayer sounded louder than Koko's and then on the youtube thing where it shows similiar videos it showed a 660 with the swamp series and that was obnoxious. Of all those, Koko's sounded the best, but it could have been anything (video qaulity, location, etc) b/c it was the same muffler. IF the LRD is quiter than the HMF Swamp I'm interested. I'll have to poke around the net and check out all those links soon. Just no time right now. Maybe I can turn up a few video's or soundbites of them. But on another note, if it's more quiet, I assume it is more restrictive which means less performance. I'm quickly learning that this is a game of trial and error. That's why I'm leaning on you guys so much. You've been there and done that.

The thought of buying a stealth kit doesn't appeal to me either. If money were no object sure, it'd be an option. I just know too little right now about these things, but I will say, even though they all sounded loud (minus koko's for whatever reason) they sounded good. :evil6:

Vids are tough to guage sound. Camera quality, background noise, microphone placement all play a roll. I had a 660 with an ebay tip and I'll say that the Swamp Series is either the same sound or quieter.
You can't really say 100% that quieter means more restrictive. I've not seen an HMF in person to know it's diameter but when grizzly wizard received mine, he first commented on how large it was in diameter. If it's quieter than the HMF, is bigger in diameter than the HMF and potentially provides more power, LRD could simply be putting more packing in that big can to make it quieter. Who knows.
I've heard Koko's Swamp Series in person and i have to say i was more than a bit surprised at just how quiet it was. After hearing other obnoxious pipes, i was sold on his. Now if i could just find a deal on one of my own. :angry4:
Take the three bolts out of the exhaust tip and take off the spark arrester. Try that first. You can buy new tios that look cool give you more flow and cost less thann a new exhaust.
He's already got the 2r tip according to his original post in this thread. hence, the spark arrestor is already gone. The 2r tip doesn't add power anyway. It just gives a better sound.

Correct. I do have the tip. Not installed yet though. Still in packaging.
I think I'll just stick with my current mod list. I'm not ready for the exhaust. So after all of this conversation my determination is that when/if I ever go with a pipe, A CDI Box and Airbox mod are in order as well (as well as re-jetting).

Thanks for the helpful input. :notworthy:

Or for just a few extra dollars you could go with a big bore kit. :angel10:
is anyone working on a big bore kit? With a cam for the 700?

Wait we're talking 660.

Lemme get the quad set up with my intial mod list and we'll see where it goes from there. I can't say enough great things about the site and the technical info and advice. :icon_thumleft:
