[This is a post from one of our regular members. Since we had two topics running on the same item, we have merged the two threads together so everyone could get everything from one topic.]

I haven't seen any reviews on anyone using a machined sheave, however, I am new here & may have missed something.
I want to give a little bike background so you have an idea of where I started before adding the machined sheave.
I own a 2003 Yamaha Grizzly 660. The only engine mods I had before the sheave change was a Pro Design K&N filter & mount, Dalton Clutch kit for 27 / 28 inch tires from 3000 to 6000 ft (even though I ride at higher elevations than 6000 ft) & a custom remote dual oil filter setup with an engine oil cooler.
The stock roller weights in the primary clutch sheave weigh in at 12 grams each. The Dalton rollers weighed in at 16 grams each.
In mid February I bought some all season tracks & since we had so much snow, began using them right away. The tracks take a fair amount of power to turn & get any speed. But they are a blast & worth every penny in my opinion.
After talking to a friend who owns a Rhino 660 which he had installed a machined sheave on for better performance in the sand, I decided to look into getting one.
I did some web searching & couldn't really find one already machined for the Grizzly ( I did later however). I could send my sheave in, but that would cut into my riding time. So I started looking at Rhino sheaves & came across a kit from Fix Power Sports. This kit came with a machined sheave, new rollers (unknown weight at the time) a jet kit with a new main & needle jet, throttle spring, etc., a couple of shim washers, & new grease.
So I went ahead & ordered the kit. (NOTE: the kit I ordered was for a 2004 Rhino 660.)
From what I had read about machined sheaves, they all seemed to have the area where the clutch rollers ride machined so the rollers can move farther outboard when power is applied.
After inspecting the Fix Power Sport sheave, it has the face, or the surface the belt rides on, machined.
Also, the weights that came in the kit weighted in at 14 grams each. So I decided to stay with my Dalton rollers.
After installing the new sheave & the primary clutch support on the bike, I started it up to make sure every thing moved as it should. I revved up the bike to watch the clutch & the belt for proper functioning. Not sure how far the belt came up the sheave face before, but it came right to the top of sheave now.
I buttoned everything up & prepared to go riding the next day & try this new sheave out.
The next day, I prepared to load the bike onto my flat bed truck. The first thing I noticed was, barely giving the bike any throttle & it moved (this is with tracks on remember). The bike drove up the ramps much easier. I was feeling good about this mod. The real test would come when I got it out on the snow.
When I got out on the snow, I noticed the bike had a lot more bottom end. It pulled harder & felt faster. I didn't really have a long flat area to try a speed run, but I was grinning for sure.
I took the first turn off the main trail & headed up this slope. I'm not sure of the grade, but it's at a fairly good angle. I nailed the throttle & I was amazed at how the bike pulled that hill. It also stayed in this power band much better. It pulled hard all the way to the top. I had good speed, quick throttle response to the point of being almost snappy.
I tore around those hills just having a blast at the new found power.
I can't wait to try this new clutch setup with my tires.

Long story short, this mod is well worth the cost.

Gunny, I have to admit this is the first I"ve heard about machining the sheave. Sounds like the results were well worth it. I'd be curious to know your thoughts after putting tires back on.

GrizzlyWizard, I hope I posted it in the correct location ... :dontknow: ... and I guess the format was OK.

KoKo ... Personally, I had my doubts when I ordered it to be honest. However now, I'd spend the money again in a heartbeat.
Yup, I'm look'in real forward to see how it works with my tires. I have 27 inch 589's & 27 inch Dirt Tamers, both on steel wheels. So if I can get some added bottom end & have it pull like it does with the tracks .... Oh man, it's gonna be fun !!! :laughing7: :eek:ccasion14: :icon_thumleft:

Interesting you bring this up as I recently found on Trinity's site that they have a sheeve for a Rhino 700. I emailed them to ask if they have one for a Grizz since the Grizz and Rhino sheeves are different part numbers. But, I've not gotten a response.

I'll have to contact Fix about this.

MY GOD, Fix starts out clutch rollers at $109.95. WHAT A STEAL since they cost $4 a piece from a dealership and there are only 8. If you can make that much on weights, we're gonna add rollers to the ATVTorture store.

You can get rollers cheaper at Dalton or EPI, but they are more than the $4 ea you say you pay at the dealer. Is that price for any weight roller you want ?
However, like I wrote, my friend with the Rhino got his sheave someplace else, not at Fix Power Sports. He paid the same price as I did & all he got was the sheave. No rollers, no jet kit, no shims, & no grease. So I didn't feel to bad about what I paid.
So, yeah, you may find one someplace else cheaper .... but I know the one from Fix Power Sports works. So I'm good.

By the way, I didn't call Fix Power Sports & talk them about if this would work or not ... I just did it .... :evil6: :evil6: :evil6:

I don't think you overpaid on your sheave kit since Trinity sells a kit for the 660 Rhino for $219 and all it is is the sheave it seems as it states lighter rollers can be added for an additional $50. You got a lot more stuff for the extra $40 in retail price.

I also see that Fix sells a Rhino 700 kit, which includes their rollers for $249 here.

Your original post stated that from what you had read about machined sheaves, the ramps are machined so the rollers go farther out. Were you able to confirm Fix does this on their product compared to your factory one prior to installing it? I ask b/c their site makes no mention of that technique specifically. It just says it's machined.

Oh, just realized I didn't answer everything. In regards to the prices of the weights, $4 is just an average as some are a few cents cheaper, some are a few cents more. When I bought my Kodiak 450 weights and the Grizz 660 weights, they were around $4.50 each for all 8 after tax if I recall.

My friends sheave WAS machined in the area of the rollers. But I can't remember where he bought his.
Fix Power Sports machined the FACE of the sheave, NOT the area where the rollers ride. So, it's a different way to go.
Now, I have no idea which is better & I'm not really up on these "Snowmobile" type clutches. However, my friend is. He races snowmobiles & has had them for over 30 yrs. So I trust his input. When he saw the sheave I got from Fix Power Sports, he stated he thought it would give me more than the one he got (with the roller area machined).
So, you can take that for what it's worth, but I was so impressed with the performance I got from adding this, I thought I'd pass it along to anyone who wants to give it a try for "More Get Up & Go" .... cause I feel this mod will really wake up a bike with tires.

By the way, if you decide to get one (I assume you are running tires right now) ... I'd be real interested in your impressions cause it's gonna be a good six to eight weeks before I take my tracks off ..... to much snow & then mud out there yet dude !!! :icon_thumleft:

Just got off the phone with Trinity. They also modify the angle on the face of it, not the tracks the weights roll in. There's does come with roller, just not really light ones.

It certainly would be interesting to try and i would like to review one from either or both of the 2 places.

Fix Powersports Grizzly 700 Clutch Sheave

We are proud to announce that we will be receiving a NEW product, not yet released to the general public, from Fix Powersports. Fix is known for, amongst many other performance modifications, their clutch work in the Rhino arena and have been doing R&D on a clutch sheave they've designed specifically for the Grizzly 700. Fix has agreed to donate this product to ATV Torture and we will be receiving it in a few days.

We are excited to see the extremity of the gains from a machined clutch sheave as we've heard very good things about the improvements their sheave makes on the Rhinos.

What's to be expected from replacing the factory sheave with a CNC machined sheave you ask. We've been told that top speed is increased so that's just icing on the cake. We're also told that the sheave will make vast improvements in low to mid-range torque and makes the quad get out of the hole much faster than even just doing clutch weight swaps will.

Needless to say, we're on the edge of our seat with anticipation and know many of you Grizzly 700 owners will be as well.

From the entire ATV Torture Team, we say thanks to Fix Powersports for giving us this opportunity.

I'll be very interested in your review. Why you ask when I have a 660 ? Well, I have a thread here where I put a Rhino 660 sheave on my bike from Fix Power Sports. Can you say, "Huge Performance Gain !" ... So, one made just for the Grizz, it ought be a great review.

Well, although you noticed a substantial gain in your 660 by going to a Rhino sheave, there are a couple of differences:

1.) A 700 is a far different machine powerwise from a 660. Designwise, yes, they're both a CVT transmission, but there are other things far different. This isn't an insult but they're quite different quads so the gains may or may not be completely different. At the same time, we may see the same gain on a 700 that you saw on your 660. We would actually like to review a 660 sheave if they have one desgined for a Grizz 660 to see the gains for that intended application as there are a LOT of Grizz 660 owners that would love to have this type of gain. We do have a Grizz 660 test quad that we would love to try one of their sheaves on. The question is, is the demand for a 660 specific application in demand enough to be worth the time of Fix to provide it or produce it. You all are the consumer, so your word is what can determine that for the 660 owners reading this. If you would be interested in a review, by all means, respond back and we'll see what we can work out with them.

2.) The sheave for the Grizz 700 has been designed by Fix exactly for the 700 with weight differences between it and the Rhino playing into the design aspects of it. If there is MUCH of a difference in the Rhino 700 and Grizz 700 sheave designwise I can't answer, but they have said there IS a difference. I do know that Fix told me today that they did design it purposefully for the Grizz700 b/c of the weight difference rather than just using a Rhino-deisgned sheave for a Grizz. Since they have invested R&D time into this product for machining, I feel sure they have tested their already-built Rhino sheave on the Grizz and found a better gain on a differently built sheave made just for the Grizz. Otherwise, why invest the time and extra machining cost and labor for an additional product.

We are really looking forward to this review as a bottom-end to mid-range gain on the Grizz as it is something that every 700 owner looks for at some point. If it does what we're told that it will do, and we don't doubt them at all from the time they've invested and there reputation, this could possibly be one of the best torque and speed mods out there.

No biggie. The more I look at the 700, the more I see they are different than what I have.
As for the sheave giving you more bottom & mid-range ... if it is anything like the one I put on form them (& yes, it's not for a Grizz) you 700 guys are gonna love it. I added the sheave mod to give me back some performance when I'm running the tracks. Did I NEED it to run the tracks, No ... but what that sheave gave me in the bottom end & how it pulls the hills makes it just a down right blast.

I posted the same review on another forum & there's a guy who lives real close to me that went ahead & ordered the same sheave I did, for his 660 Grizz. He's running tires right now, so I'm real interested to see what he thinks when he gets his on.

It was mentioned the Rhino sheave is designed for the Rhino & not the Grizz b/c the weight difference in machines. And I considered that, however, with all the stuff on my machine & the tracks, I figure I'm right close to the same weight as a Rhino ... which as you know, is 1000 lbs. I figure I have 600 lbs for my bike (dry). Bumpers, winch, add-ons, stuff in my cargo box (maybe 100 lbs or more), 7 1/2 gals of extra gas (37 lbs approx), & the tracks at 280 lbs dry (who knows how much I add when the bike is covered & packed with wet snow) for a total of a little over 1000 lbs. Kinda blows your mind doesn't it ?? :sad2: :sad2:
No wonder I can't pick up the front end when I'm stuck like I can my 86 Moto-4 ... :laughing4: :sign10: :laughing4:

Anyway, I'm gonna be watching this thread to see what you think of it. Here's hop'in ! :eek:ccasion14:

Very good point made on your additional weight from the tracks. In your application, most likely a Rhino sheave indeed is the best route.

They told me UPS had already run yesterday by the time we were able to work something out but that it would ship today. Since they're in MN, I'm assuming a 3 day UPS travel time. if I could get a tracking number form them and know what day it will arrive, I would tear my quad down the night before.
