</td> <td width="72%">Have you ever had a flat tire on your ATV? It is not a matter of “if” you’re going to get a flat. It’s a matter of when. I have had one while far away from home, and it ruined my entire day of riding. I tried plugs, tire sealant, but to no avail. I was stuck! Making the trip back to camp at a snail’s pace is something I will not soon forget. Why not eliminate tire failures by using a tire that is capable of running with no air.
Essex Manufacturing, Inc. has produced that tire, the Essex Surefoot 589MT.
We decided to give Essex Surefoot tires a try. The Essex Surefoot 25” tire is based on the proven 589MT tread pattern used by other tire manufactures. Essex takes the design a step further by manufacturing this tire with a tougher “Stubble Guard” rubber compound. This makes the tire puncture resistant and provides longer tread wear. Essex also combines a material found in bullet proof vests. You guessed it, Kevlar. I am certain these tires are not actually bullet proof, but they sure are extremely puncture resistant. Essex also touts that their Surefoot tire has reinforced run-flat sidewalls to thwart sidewall punctures. This reinforced sidewall gives the rider the ability to drive the vehicle with very little or no air pressure at all. The Surefoot also has a very deep rim guard to protect the bead area on the tire.</td> </tr> </tbody></table>

I stood on one before mounting it on a wheel. Most tires would collapse under 190 pounds but the Surefoot tire held the weight with hardly any flex at all. Our ride was on a paved road for approximately 6 miles before we could get on the trail. I have tested both bias and radial tires in the past. Both have had a slight wobble or lope at high speeds. The Surefoot tires, even with the aggressive 589MT tread pattern, were very smooth.
At the trail head, I hit the throttle to test the traction capability in some loose river gravel. The Surefoot tires grabbed with very little spin. I was having fun with the 25 inch tires. Their size and design made the Grizzly 700 feel very nimble. I took a very tight trail that was still slippery from the previous night’s thunderstorm. The Surefoot tires pulled through every tight turn I came to with ease. Even though the tread design is more “utilitarian,” these tires performed extremely well on twisting trails.
I came upon a logging area that was rutted out and quite muddy. It looked to be the most challenging section and surely a good test of the Essex Surefoot tires. My fellow ATV buddies began taunting and chanting “do it” as I approached this muddy area. Off I went into the viscous section of West Virginia clay. Clawing through, the Surefoot tires pulled me to the other side with ease. End result, two troughs and a great deal of mud dripping from my fenders. Essex never mentioned the use of the Surefoot tires as ditch diggers but we can now add it to the list uses.

I have put over 300 miles on these tires on various types of terrain with very minimal tread wear. Shooting the tire with a bullet was outside the scope of this test, but I can see why these tires are described by some, as “bullet proof.” The Surefoot tires’ “run flat” technology, deep rim guard, and Kevlar belt, make this tire as close to indestructible as you can get with an ATV tire.
