Hey all, been awhile since I have been on this forum, but been really busy. Anyway, I hav a 06' 660 with k&n filter and Pre filter, 26" ITP mudlite xtr's on 12" ITP type 7 rims. I have always rode in Maine, Where I live, ( this is sea level to about 1,000ft) however, I am being stationed at Ft Bliss Texas, with the Army, in el paso, tx and I will be riding in the 3,000-5,000 ft range.. Should I get my Carb rejetted, maybe with a dyno jet kit? I have no experience jetting a carb so I would be having it done, but I was wondering if I even need to at this elevation change? Also should I consider using the "ice" coolanat in the machine because its so damn hot down there?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I would ride it a bit first once you get there. Usually the rule of thumb I have used is the if their is a 3000 ft variance then you may have troubles. Do a search on this site for the DAJ or dial a jet kit. You can install that and be pretty safe in all altitudes. But jetting isn't too complicated though. We could probably talk you through it.

Fort Bliss...are you in ADA by chance. Say hello to Dyer street for me! On another note, if you go north to Ruidosa, NM it is some beautiful country. It's only a few hours from the base and is a nice change from staring at the desert. If you are a hunter, there is some great hunting in that area as well. It is only about 2 hours IIRC from the base. Then if you are a younger guy, it gets really wild across the river in Juarez (wa-zoo).

thanks man.. I figured I would ride it a bit and see how she acts. I will be working out of Beaumont hospital, I am in the medical corp, got my residency there. I hope to do some hunting but not sure where yet. It seems pretty easy to ride out there, just need a 8 dollar sticker. Found a big off road park in Fabens. At times I felt she was rich running around sea level, it calmed down a bit when I gave her a little more air with the K&N filter. But higher elevation richens it right? I can fix alot of stuff but engines really isn't my thing when it comes to adjusting components. Plus the carb looks like a pain in the azz to take off, atleast from my point of view from the access panels. If you think just dropping in one of the things you are talking about would do the trick, then could you give me some more info? Thank

Welcome back. It sounds like you are getting the green weeny. In Maine during the Winter and Texas during the Summer. DANG!

The altitude difference you mentioned doesn't bother me too much. I used to ride that with my 660. Both before and after the DAJ. Just like GW said, give her a chance down there to see what she does. Then we'll take it one step at a time if we need to. Good luck with you're move.

Well, congrats on your residency. I think you will enjoy it, and like I said coming from the east, you will wanna see trees, grass and mountains occasionally. Ruiodoso, NM is a very nice little town (at least is was 19 years ago) There is skiing as well as some good fishing there also.

As for the DAJ It will require removing the Carburetor. Additionally, you will need to drill the float bowl and the body of the carb venturi. This may be a little more that you feel comfortable with doing so you may want to seek out a good shop that you trust to do the work. If you are going simply to re-jet, then you'll still need to remove the carb I think.

well I went on dial a jets website, and they said you don't need to remove the carb but who knows. people say that they come lean from the factory, but I had a mechanic friend I ride with say she smellled rich when I first went riding with him.. I say I will hold off. Until I ride it down there. Looks like there are a lot of shops in the El Paso area, so shouldn't be a problem to find one. There is a lot of riding down there.. I will definitely be looking for some help, if it proves to be really expensive to get it done.

well I took the grizz for a little ride today and it ran pretty strong, no sputtering of what ever.. so I think I will stay as is.. for now. Its about 4100 feet elevation here.. so we'll see how it goes!

running rich/lean from the factory depends where you're at... Also, I don't think you can really go by the smell on a new bike... it's breaking so many things in, to include to the exhaust canister, that I don't know if you would really be able to tell other than by throttle response and during decel... Even then I would give it a few rides...

Hebs, is somewhat correct on the bikes stoichiometry. Typically due to EPA emission requirements from certain states, most machines are lean to slightly lean.

One way to tell how the carb it tuned it to do a series of plug chops. This isn't the most scientific way, but it is the cheapest and will give you an idea of how you machine is tuned.
