Proof that hay bale rope and CV boots don't mix too well.

Here's what I found when rinsing my quad today after a day (and night) of riding. I'll be posting a step by step for replacing a cv boot on the 09 outlander soon.

Here is the resulting destruction

Here is what the healthy boot looks like

Dude, that blows and I don't envy you at all.

I had to replace a boot on my bro-in-law's big bear 400 and it sucked. not only did it suck what all I had to remove to get it out of the quad, but it is the nbastiest messiest job ever. PLUS, teh strap that came with it to affix the boot back to the joint required a special tool to tighten them properly which i didn't have, so I had to use screw drive type hose clamps.

Thanks for the heads-up on the upcoming fix B-man. I'll be sure to ask about the special tool when ordering the boot.
Mine didn't take a special tool. Although I know my friends Outty 400 did.

If they send you the factory cv joint straps for the can-am, they will require a tool that will grab it, pinch it together tight enough for the clips to snap in place. You might could do it with vice grips but it doesn't look like it by looking at mine, and ours are the same.

kevlar boot protectors? tell me more, please! tore the rear inboard cv boot about a month ago, waiting on the back-ordered replacement. tore the front inboard about a week ago, still need to order that one. interesting story: i wanted the oem boot ($44) instead of a universal replacement ($18) because the universal looks completely different, and it would be obvious since they're only about 8 inches apart from one another. called around and nobody had it, except the dealer who is closest to me. i avoid them because they p***ed me off when i was shopping for a new renegade. so i worked a long shift and had been up for about 30 hours, stopped in to pick it up. i noticed the oem bag had been opened up and taped back up, but didn't pay any more attention to it. i was checking out the new stuff on the floor and some other aftermarket stuff. i get home and go to open the bag, it's a universal boot inside the oem packaging! i don't open it, haul a$$ back to the stealership and flip out! they swear it's the factory part, but refuse to come out on the floor and compare it to the ones on the renegades. i get my money back and, hopefully cost them a couple customers who were wandering around in there. anyway, i order from another dealer who saya they'd have it in 4 days max. that was 4/7, i called them last week and they say it's backordered until may. i've been doing temporary fixes with black rtv and it seems to hold up ok. i just hate worrying about it so i wanna replace them. sorry to get off-topic, please elaborate on the kevlar boot protectors. i was thinking of fabbing something up to prevent any more tears.

right now, just the stock skid that comes with the x package. i'm trying to find a local supplier of HDPE so i can fab some custom skids and cv protectors, thinking maybe 3/8" or so. do you have a link or any pics of the kevlar protectors?

I don't have a picture at the moment. I am not even sure if they make something for the Can Ams. I know they were available for the Yamaha's.

I've seen pics of the yami ones on another site. I should invest some time and try to figure out who was putting them out. My initial thoughts on these things wasn't much. It might save you from a small stick or rock, etc, but I can't see them doing much with baler twine. It looked like a kevlar feed sack wrapped around the cvt. I'd still consider them if they are offered. I'll see if I can find them.

i know he didn't do anything with the rear outboard boots (where you ran into trouble), but i definitely like the setup in general.

That's very impressive work indeed. A lot of mystery shrouding it though. Not just in the manufacturing process, but in the durability area too. I know that is some thick and tuff plastic, but I question the ability to take a hard heavy blow and it still be intact for the next ride.

As far as the boots go. lemme know. I won't play middle man. I'll pm you the phone number if you want. I've got another place you can try as well. They are a bit cheaper but didn't offer the tool I needed so I just ordered everything from the dealer.

yeah, hit me up. i don't need the tool, i've wrestled with the clamps before. if the cheaper place sells oem parts, i'll give them a try. thx again!
