Re: ATVTORTURE POLL

My personal opinion is that it should be the individuals right to wear a helmet or not.
Re: ATVTORTURE POLL

I believe the same as billybob. Although, making it mandatory for youths to have one is a good thing. Wait until they are old enough to make a rational decision for themselves.
Re: ATVTORTURE POLL

I feel that it should be choice for all ages. I am a parent of five children under the age of 18 and the state and government have imposed way too many laws that I don't believe in. I am still livid :cussing: over the whole seat belt thing. I would have to say and grizzlywizzard knows that I would not ever wear a helmet unless I was being taped or pics for the web site. This is just my opinion but I don't think state or government has the right to impose on our freedoms.
Re: ATVTORTURE POLL

I agree it should be a choice. You're hurting no one but yourself in an accident if you don't have a belt or a helmet on. My uncle who was a state trooper saw one too many accident that resulted in a death on the Massachusetts Turnpike that could have been prevented with a seat belt. Not that it can't happen but he had never once been to an accident where a seat belt caused a death. On the flip side with a helmet...bad parenting and poor education could cause a child to get hurt. The helmet law imo is there for to protect kids from dumb parents. Bear, you're one of the good parents who I'm sure has taught there kids to ride properly and to ride safe. Unfortunately there's a whole host of bad parents out there, and the downside is ending of life that could have been prevented.
Re: ATVTORTURE POLL

Here we go...flame me if you wish, but I feel that helmet laws should be in effect. You say it's your right not to wear a helmet, I say it is my right to ensure that you are protected. Why is this you may ask? Because when you have an accident in which a helmet could have saved you, it will be my tax dollars that send the paramedics to your rescue (which I hope will be successfull) not only for monetary purposes, but for your families sake, and not to mention for the benefit of the sport. We all know what happens when something bad happens on an ATV. More bad publicity for the entire sport. Trust me folks, that is something the sport does not need.

We fail to remember, that most everything we do will in some way impact someone else. It may be a complete stranger, or it could be a loved one. "Most" of the laws we have in relation to safety are for our protection as well as the protection of everyone else. Prime case; Mr. Honda was riding his quad down a trail a leisurely pace on a bright and clear day and Mr. Yama was riding the same trail but at a vivid, adrenline pumping pace. Mr. Honda was not wearing a helmet because he did not have to and knew he would only be riding very easy terrain at a very conservative pace. Mr. Yama was wearing a helmet because he knew he would be WOT a lot and hitting more technical lines on the trail. Mr. Honda rounds the curve and Mr. Yama is powersliding the same turn, the two meet and this resulted in a catostophic event for Mr. Honda and Mr. Yama because Mr. Honda was killed instantly leaving his wife, children, and parents behind, who became very bitter with the sport and started taking an active role in protesting our right to ride period. Mr. Yama was not seriously hurt, but he has to live with the consiquences of both his actions and Mr. Honda's that day for the rest of his life. Mr. Yama quit riding altogether and to this day has nightmares about what happened. The trail was closed indefinitely because the law suit Mr. Honda's family brought against the owners forced them into bankruptcy. This is not a true story, but only an insight to what happens (and it HAS happened).

I wear a helmet everytime (unless I move my quad from one side of the yard to the other. If I'm working on the quad, I will wear a half helmet. If I'm riding full throttle or technical, I'll wear a full face MX. And yes, I will tell you that you should have on a helmet if your riding with me, but I will not flame you for it and I am not flaming you now. It is my opinion. And nothing more.

Let the flaming begin. :violent5:

Here is some interesting info.

DOT introduces legislation to encourage helmet use

Powersports Business
Monday February 18, 2008

U.S. Transportation Secretary Mary Peters sent legislation to Congress seeking greater flexibility for states to target one of the leading causes of motorcycle deaths across the nation – riding without a helmet, according to a Feb. 14 press release from the Department of Transportation.

Sarge...you said

If I'm working on the quad, I will wear a half helmet.
Does that mean you wear a helmet while changing the oil on your quad? :sign10:

Yeah...what if it falls on my head? :laughing4: J/K. Lemme rephrase this for my more observant audience, "If I'm working WITH the quad (using it in a manner of work not play) then I wear a half helmet".
Re: ATVTORTURE POLL

Just checking... :eek:ccasion14:
Re: ATVTORTURE POLL

Very well written / said SARGE. You put it in a perspective most of us can relate too. Not to mention the fact that if the accident between Mr. Yamaha and Mr. Honda had not ended in a death but serious injury in which Mr. Honda had become permanently disabled, who would pay for that? Most likely the taxpayers. Not to mention more the likely increase in our health insurance and on and on and on. It's the price we all indirectly pay for others stupidity or laziness.

I had better shut up now.... :cold:
Re: ATVTORTURE POLL

Mr Honda should have been riding a Yamaha and he wouldnt have been riding so slow and maybe already have been thru the corner...J/k

I wear a helmet and I do hate them! But at least I know im some what safer.... If the law saved one life then its worth it too me.
Re: ATVTORTURE POLL

That is why this is such a great country! We can have a different opinion as long as the law makers think it is ok. Just like I said if you wanna wear your helmet that is all fine and dandy but don't tell me I gotta wear mine or that I ain't got enough sense to make sure my kids are safe. I guess I ain't talkin about individuals I mean govournment and law makers.
Re: ATVTORTURE POLL

well i think everyone should wear a helmet.....but then again this is america this is a free country.....they shouldn't pull you over and give you a ticket for not wearing a helmet.
Re: ATVTORTURE POLL

As much as I hate the gubmint telling me what to do, if you're riding on someone else's property, you may have to abide by their rules. This includes public property, where the gubmint gets to make the rules. I believe that you should always wear a helmet when riding an ATV, but it should be your choice when you're on your own property.
I think children should be made to wear helmets and adults can have their choice. I personally dont ride without one
I think Helmet laws suck ,except for kids they need to be old enough to make there own mind up. You can die with one on and you can die without one.
I'm ripping this from my friend on another site but I think he about nailed it. :icon_thumleft:

Well sometimes it seems like people do just about everything they can to take as much risk as possible or at minimum, flaunt the laws of physics and taunt fate.

So maybe we come up with something new: Its a Darwin Bracelet. Works kinda like a Medic Alert bracelet but instead alerts the responders and would be do-gooders not to fret about your vegetative state, or publicize it as an unfortunate accident. On the bracelet it simply says:
I knew the Risks and Took a Chance Anyhow, so Please Don't Worry About Me, I had it Coming !
