ATV Product Review: PIAA 510 ATP Series Light Kit

Great review! Now just one question. Did you notice any strain on the charging system of the quad?
I can't believe how much more light they throw!
Yah, it would be really interesting to see how well they work, replacing the 35 watt bulb with either their 55 or 85. This is the breakdown of available wattage bulbs and what wattage these bulbs perform like:

35 watt - performs like 60 watt
55 watt - performs like 85 watt
85 watt - performs like 135 watt

Man, imagine the difference in using the 85 watter, at over double the output of the ones that come in these lamps. Wish we knew the drain they would cause on the charging system.
You can always put an aftermarket stator on .... there's one out there that's 300 watts. :icon_thumleft: :icon_thumleft:

I used a clamp on digital amp meter and these light draw 2.98 amps DC. And this was at 32 degrees F. These should not be a problem on the charging system at all.

If it matters when running the PIAA lights, PIAA 55/60 W headlights, Garmin GPS and pulling the Warn 2.5 winch under a load I am putting a 11 Amp draw on the system at 32 degrees F. This translates to 142 Watts of consumption.
I just read an article that stated because of the power steering, the Grizzly 700 stator is a 200 watt stator. And, I've been looking for an upgraded one & there doesn't seem to be one. :sad2:

I'm sure, if a guy was concerned, he could have the stock stator rewound. :icon_thumleft:

Gary, from your findings on 2.98 AMPS DC draw on the lights alone, can that translate into .085 AMPS (2.98 amps / 35 watts) so that you can multiply that out and get the draw on the 85 watt bulbs. If so, what would that convert to wattage-wise?

Lastly, how does outside temp relate to amperage draw? Is it higher or lower at higher temps. I would assume higher draw for higher temps but you're the electrical engineer, not me.

Using Ohms law the current draw on 85 Watt bulbs would be 6.53846 amps at 13 volts DC.

Some electrical items such as winches tend to run harder drawing more current when ambient temperatures are colder. I should also mention that when the vehicle was up to operating temperature the systems current dropped 1.34 amps DC. Most electrical specs are usually based on an operating temperature range. Which is why I through that in.
this talk is over my head...I'll leave it up to you smart guys.
I'm then left to assume the stator would be producing more than enough output to push the larger bulbs, even with if the additional items you mentioned were pulling juice at the same time. Would that be safe to say?

My question is are you considering 85W light bulbs. Are these 85W a piece or as a set.
Of course I'm considering it. However, I don't know the answer to your other question. Are headlight bulbs normally rated per bulb or set. i would assume per bulb but now you're making me question myself. ???
After reading the review on the PIAA light kit I decided to buy a pair for my new Grizzly.
The installation was easy even though I mounted them temporarily on my front rack until my Warn front bumper gets delivered.
I had a couple of simple questions on the lights and mounting bracket that I needed to call PIAA about and their customer service was great.
The questions were simple and after talking to customer service i felt stupid for calling.

#1. When I mounted the light using the universal bracket, and hung the light upside down from the rack the light was pointing towards the grill and I couldnt figure out how to get it to turn 180 deg. to point to the front.
Answer. Remove the small bracket from the light and turn it 180 deg. and the light will mount correctly.

#2. Now that the light is mounted upside down how do I remove the PIAA light grill without breaking it so I can have the name PIAA right side up?
Answer. Just pul real hard and it will pop off and you can replace it right side up.

I havent had the chance to try them out at night yet but they look aweosome in the daylight.

The lights are 35w bulbs X 2 = 70w. 70/12 (12 volt system) = 5.8. So these lights should only draw 5.8 amps.
The Grizzly stator should put out about 17 amperes so the draw wouldnt be noticed.
I tried the lights with my high beams on and I didnt notice any apparent draw problems on the Griz.

we were shooting for 7 days on the Paiute trails in Utah.
My dealer overfilled my rear differential and it threw oil all over the front of my quad via the breather tube.
Since it was brand new and I had no idea why it was loosing so much oil we called it on the 3rd day, with just over a hundred miles.
The oil had even got onto the right front brake pads.
Interesting .... I'm gonna shoot ya a PM about your trip ... but I've gotta leave right now. :sad2: ... so it'll be a little later. :icon_thumleft:
