REVIEW: EHS RACING Custom Air box Cover
Test Vehicle: 2007 Grizzly 700

MSRP: $120
Written by: GaryB

When you are adding aftermarket accessories like a better flowing exhaust or performing any kind of fuel delivery modifications like a jet kit or using a fuel map programmer if it’s an EFI machine, it is almost a must to let as much air as you can in.

The only way to do that is by the addition of better flowing aftermarket air filter such as those that are readily available at most of your ATV / power sports retailers. Well Eric Sutton owner of EHS Racing has taken this a step further with his custom modified air box lids.

We ordered two lids, one for the 2003 Rincon we use for some testing and will be reviewed in another segment sometime next month and another for the 2007 XTG (Extreme Terrain Grizzly 700). You can purchase it as a kit and modify your air box cover or you can spend just a couple more dollars and receive a new cover completely modified and ready for installation. Plug and play!

The air box lids arrived just in time for our trip to Southern West Virginia's Hatfield and McCoy Trailfest. After a quick inspection from everyone in our entire group like it was a newborn baby it was time to install the air box on the Grizzly 700. Installation was a snap and the instructions provided were very easy to comprehend. Since these are merely modified with the OEM air box covers the fit was perfect. The aluminum plate, which surrounds the water resistant Outerwears fabric, is custom CNC milled for exact precision with the EHS Racing Logo engraved on it.

Upon ride testing we noticed a nice mid range power increase. It is really hard to tell from our “seat of the pants dyno” but we could tell a slight difference in performance. The real gain though is in the protection it added to the air filtration on our Grizzly 700. The Grizzly 700 system in our opinion has an extremely poor air filter setup. If not properly installed the stock setup will allow dust and dirt to get past the air filter itself causing damaging harm to your engine. The EHS Racing lid along with the custom plug for the boxes intake hole acted as a pre-filter during our riding in the extremely dusty conditions.

We had tested this system against 2 other grizzly 700’s that weekend and both machines required their air filters to be cleaned every night after returning back to the camp. My Grizzly with the EHS Racing lid did not require a single cleaning during our entire trip.

The only downside we could see in this system is that is could have the possibility to allow water in the air box. I personally did not think that this was a big concern for the Grizzly 700 due to it's high airbox location, but other machines may be affected by this.

In summary the EHS Racing custom air box cover is an excellent add on that will add both performance as well as protection for your investment. For anybody wanting to improve their airflow as well as increase their engines air filtration efficiency, take a serious look at this lid. You won't be disappointed. Give Eric at EHS Racing a call! He's a great guy to work with and offers a 100% satisfaction guarantee!

We give it the TORTURED stamp of approval and endorse EHS Racing products.

I know this has been out awhile, but do you feel whatever gain you achived, was worth the cost ?? I ask, becasue, those lids are kinda pricey.
But it does seem to make sense, if a guy is gonna add a cam, piston, aftermarket air filter system and or a pipe, more air IS required. And we all know how the stock air box lid hampers that.

I have another question. I've noticed, that if I remove my lid, the intake is way loud. Now that may be because it's inside that box, but, when you installed that lid, did you notice any more intake noise ??

Thanks ...

Gunny,

I noticed more mid and top end gain than the bottom...Which would be expected. However I used it more as a pre-filter. The Grizzly 700 has and open snout on the cover, and a very poor filter setup. The open snout gets a foam plug to use. Last year the drought conditions in So. WV created much dust. When compared to other 700's with stock setups. I had very little dust on my filter while others with Grizzly 700's were caked with dust. And this also led to one of the machines requiring a new top end due to air filter failure. :BangHead:

The EHS Racing lid did make a very good gain with the Honda Rincon.

Now I am going to test it this week without the snout plug to determine if it gives any additional power. I will let you know what I find. Do I feel it's worth the money. Yes.....If nothing else for the grizzly to provide the pre-filter effects. If money is an object you could always opt for the Kit and do it yourself. This is a very easy task.

Good point (more & cleaner air is better) ... I was wondering about getting the kit for my airbox lid. Maybe I will, casue on the 660, the snout it has just seems so restrictive ....

Thanks for the reply, more good info.

I've thought about putting a K&N filter Outer Wear cover over my air box lid snout ... yet I haven't done that either. But I'm with you, the foam, or some sort of Outer Wear cover seems like a good idea.
One thing I did do, and I'm not sure what the 700 has, but the crankcase breather hose that goes into the air box lid on the 660, I took it off the air box lid, put a new hose on the case, ran it up the side of the motor, along the air box, & then down the bottom outside of the frame just in front of the R/R tire. No more spewing oil on my air filter. It was never very much, but it made a mess.

Where can you purchase the extra screens, just from EHS or is it a standard screen you can buy anywhere?
