Carlisle Mud Wolf Tire Review

Carlisle Mud Wolf First Inspection

When you first look at these tires, you can’t help but notice that the aggressive nature of the tread pattern is like no other out there. The next thing you notice is the shear girth of the lugs associated with this aggressive tread pattern. At 1-1/8” deep, these lugs should be a formidable contender to most tires out there. The front tires measured in at 9.2” wide and the rears were 11.5” wide. Carlisle advises load ratings not to exceed 410 lbs on the fronts and 520 lbs on the rears at 50 mph. I wouldn’t worry about this rating, it just confirms that these tires are not approved for highway use.

Here are the specifications of the Carlisle Mud Wolf:

• 6 Ply Rated – Resists Punctures Provides Stability

 • Massive, Deep Lugs – Maximum “Bite”

 • Aggressive Shoulder Treatment – Side Bite in Rutted Conditions

Before we give you our ride impression, we have to make mention of their weight. These 26” tires weighed in at nearly 130 lbs. total! The fronts were about 28.8 lbs. a piece and 35.5 lbs for the rear. That’s a lot of weight for a 26” tire. This makes these 6 ply rated tires relatively heavy when compared to similar ones currently on the market. The table shown below illustrates the weight of the other Carlisle Mud Wolf tires and their respectable sizes.

Carlisle Mud Wolf Ride Review

It was evident almost instantly that the weight of these tires did take some snap out of the bike, but to be fair the same goes for all of the tires we have reviewed to date that are not stock. With that said, I could not believe how these tires performed! These tires ate up anything you fed them on the trails. Mud, rocks, and fallen trees were nothing for this tire. The tread pattern just continued to grab, bite, and pull their way through and over most obstacles.

The engineers at Carlisle really did their homework when designing this tire. They gave this tire a great foot print. A flat profile and unique side lug design proved tough enough to gain the necessary traction needed to climb, pull, or grab onto surfaces in all types of terrain. The overall ride quality of these tires was quite pleasant considering their bias ply construction. While they may not be as good as some of the radials we tested, they can by no means be considered uncomfortable.

We found that these tires really shine at moderate speeds while traveling trails with tight turns. Trust us when we say that “your buddies will notice if they follow to close” as these tires throw quite the rooster tail of trail debris! They continued to perform great in both off-camber and technical riding scenarios. Whether the trail was muddy, hard packed or wet, this tire found a way to find traction. You can’t help but notice how surefooted these tires make your ride feel. They really give you a very safe sense of control.

Unfortunately, as of this writing we really haven’t had a chance to test these tires out in that deep “Louisiana” type of mud. What we can say, is that these tires do clean out very well in the limited amount of mud we’ve encountered to date. This we felt was an impressive quality and with that being said, I could definitely recommend them for moderate mud riding. You can easily compare these tires to the top contenders in their category and have no worries when diving into the next mud hole.

Carlisle Mud Wolf Qualities

The jury is still out on the longevity and wear characteristics of these tires as we have just passed the 500 mile mark. We are pleased to report that we have reached this milestone without any noticeable wear. As with any tire, using the correct air pressure is an important element that has a profound affect on the handling of a machine, and this tire is no exception. The only down side to these tires, other than their weight, can be found when driving at high speeds. At speed these tires tend to ride very rough and that stands to reason since they are a bias ply, non-highway service tire. So this ride trait shouldn’t be a big surprise to anyone.

Carlisle Mud Wolf Overall Analysis:

Conclusion:

The Carlisle Mud Wolf has never stopped impressing us. The durable sidewalls have proven to be extremely puncture resistant. Match this with an equally impressive tread design and it gives us everything we need in an extreme terrain situation. If asked whether we would ever consider another set of Carlisle Mud Wolf tires, the answer would be a resounding YES! I also think that the Carlisle Mud Wolf tire would also make an excellent choice as a UTV Tire. Keep in mind that no tire is perfect and these tires do a great job in the environments they were designed for. As always, just remember to ride within your limits to avoid risk or injury to both yourself and your equipment.

Great review... been waiting to read it. :icon_thumleft:

A couple of questions... What size were you testing? I saw the widths mentioned, but how tall did they measure?
These 26” tires weighed in at nearly 130 lbs. total! The fronts were about 28.8 lbs. a piece and 35.5 lbs for the rear. That’s a lot of weight for a 26” tire.
reedin iz hard :BangHead: The sad part is that in my original post, all I asked was about their true height, then I couldn't remember reading what size you were testing and I edited the post.

What is their true mounted height?
I am not sure. We will get some measurements for you .
I am going to put a set of these on my Kodiak 400. I have already bought the following to boost power: EPI clutch kit for 26"-27" tires, jet kit, unifilter, HMF Utility Series exhaust, and front locker.
Sorry, forgot to say that the size will be 26x9 front & 26x12 rear. I am not into hauling a$$ on the trails. I like to ride at a good pace, enjoy the scenery. I also like to enjoy the occasional mudhole, hence wanting to buy the Mudwolf's.
Does anyone think I will have a problem with these tires?

So far to date we have yet yo have any problems with the Mud Wolfs. They are a heavy tire though.
Thank you sir for the quick reply. I should have clarified my question though, my fault.
I know I will lose some power because of the heavier tires. But, with the mods I listed that will go on the Kodiak. Do you think I will still have the same power as it was stock with the stock tires, or will I still have some power lose? I am hoping with all the mods I will still be somewhere near stock power or a little more power.

Again thanks for the quick reply. Next time I will try to be a little clearer with my questions.

Wayne
You may still notice a slight power loss with the mods mentioned. The only reason I say this is because the 700 Grizzly tested really had nothing to compare against. Since the day it was purchased it had either 27" Mud Lites or 26" Mud Wolfs.
Thanks again sir for the reply. Hopefully the power loss will not be too noticable.
