At least 35,000 expected for spring ritual at Little Sahara

Posted: 5:54 PM- Utah's traditional rite of spring began in earnest Friday morning as thousands of people descended upon the Little Sahara Recreation Area west of Nephi.
"I'm standing outside the visitor's center, and I'm looking at a quarter-mile line of people trying to get in," said Megan Crandall, a spokeswoman for the Bureau of Land Management, which oversees the popular recreation site in Juab County.
Crandall said the BLM anticipates at least 35,000 people this weekend, maintaining the Easter tradition of playing in the 124-square-mile system of always-shifting sand dunes. And there will be a strong police presence to ensure there will be no repeat of

Entrance fees are $10 a car on holidays, $8 at other times.
ATV riders are required to have a safety flag on vehicles, and ATV operators younger than 18 must wear helmets.
Fires are permitted at campsites, but BLM rules prohibit burning wooden pallets.

Little Sahara's sand hills, including 700-foot-high Sand Mountain, are a draw for off-road vehicle operators. The site also offers campgrounds and picnic facilities.
Crandall said the BLM is expecting record crowds, due to the combination of mild weather and spring break for many schools. Easter weekend is one of Little Sahara's busiest weekends, and this year proves to be no different - even though Easter is at its earliest date since 1913.
