WV Weighing Gun Lessons For School Children

West Virginia is considering a bill to teach school children how to handle a gun and hunt safely. The bills proponents hope it will increase state revenues from hunting licenses, a state lawmaker said Thursday.

"We will teach a hunting safety course during their physical education class," state senator and bill sponsor Billy Wayne Bailey told AFP. The courses would be imparted in secondary schools, from the eighth to 10th grade (13-16 years of age).

"They will learn gun safety and the proper use of firearms. All the weapons will be disabled so there is no chance of discharging," he said, adding that the state Senate was expected to take up the bill next week.

"Hunting is an economic and cultural thing and we have seen a decline of hunting licenses over the past years," said the lawmaker, explaining that his bill would boost interest in hunting in West Virginia.

Children 10 years and older can already apply for a hunting license in West Virginia, which makes 1.5 billion dollars a year from hunting-related activities, the senator said.

I'm a firm believer in a well armed BUT trained and disciplined public. If the "good people" are armed and trained and not punished for forcefully protecting their belongings and lives then the "bad people" will not be so proactive.

JMO. Sorry, don't mean to sound like a wacko, but think about it. Would you rob me knowing that there is a 9 out of 10 chance that I am packing heat and know how to use it?

Very true SARGE! I thing the biggest gain is that kids are being educated in firearm safety. This has always been a pet peeve of mine. Everyone wants to point fingers at how bad / dangerous guns are but children are curious. And the television and news do nothing but feed the curiosity.

OK done rambing!

Not rambling GW. You're very right on. The worst thing we can do is nothing. If we TAKE RESPONSIBILITY for our children's lives and teach them about firearms and the dangers and joys of them, then we have done something. But this can not be ALL that is done. We must pay attention to our children and watch what they do, take interest in their interests, do not neglet them, and teach them WRONG from RIGHT!!! I'm not saying that every adolecent that has ever had a mishap with firearms has had "bad" parents, but I think if we knew the whole truth and nothing but the truth, we would find that more times than not those children were lacking in more areas than firearm training.

These are our children we're talking about. Whether mine or yours, they are the most precious gifts we will ever have and they are our future. We HAVE to stand up for what's right for them and ultimately everyones future.

Now. There's a rant. :toothy10:

Gun control is using both hands! Congrats to WV! The more educated people get with anything, the less dangerous it is. My 9 year old neighbor bagged his first buck this year, I've never seen a kid so happy. I would trust any member of his family with a gun. His grampa is a guide and takes safety very seriously.

Amen again !!!!! I agree. Some of the best memories of my child hood was hunting, fishing and target shooting with family and friends. I hope one day my girls can say the same. If hunting ends up not to be there thing they will still know how to safely use a firearm. And respect them.
