I had my v-belt explode on my 2005 Grizz (2500 miles). I ordered the OEM replacement belt and pulled it apart today to replace but the primary sheave won't move so I can't get the belt on. After closer examination, it looks like the whole thing spun slightly and is no longer aligned with the grooves of the shaft so I can't pull the sheave off. Anyone else out there have this happen to them? Any suggestions or am I looking at some major repairs?

Have you tried to bump on it with a rubber mallet to see if it will free it up so it will slide off?

Bugger dude !! ... If the sheave spun on the shaft, then the splines are jammed (read stripped) ... you'll either need some kinda puller or hit the inside top edge of the sheave with a dead blow hammer to knock it off ... and you'll probably have to get a new sheave & a new sheave shaft (or whatever it's called) ... good luck ! :eek:ccasion14:

success!

thanks guys. I got it off today. I used a wood block/wedge and tapped the wedge between the sheave slowly, spinning and it worked itself off. Luckily, the shaft is fine but the sheave is trashed. Also, luckily that part of the sheave is just 30 bucks! Now that I have it off, I think I'll do the mod with the clutch weights that I came across looking for help last night. I guess something good came from it all!

Here's what the damage looks like...it ain't pretty.

Holy dookie-sticks batman. That thing is trashed. I can't believe a belt did that. Nonetheless, be very very very very happy the shaft on the crank didn't get trashed. I'm guessing ingeniuous Yamaha engineering prevented it. Time for weight while ya have it down. I don't know what thread you found about weights but I did a very thorough weight write-up that has a bar graph on all of the different weight comobs. If that isn't what you found, here it is.

I think I experienced the 'perfect storm'. I was in a rain storm, it was getting muddy, and I was cruising at 40mph trying to get back to home base. When, blamo and then no-go. Had to hike out a couple miles to get cell connection and phone for help. The primary was a mess. The weights were everywhere accept where they were supposed to be and it was full of belt shrapnel. That might have locked up, triggered by the belt going, mixed with the speed I was traveling, causing the primary to 'jump track'. Not sure.

Anyway, yep, checked your charts and I'm going with the 4 660 4 Kodiak weights. Ordered everything from Yamaha Sports Plaza in OR. They seem to have much better prices than I can get locally and the two dealers here never have anything in stock that I need!

This site rocks! Thanks!

Dude, that junk sux having to hike that far for a cell signal.

I think that is a good starting point on weight and go from there. I can't wait to see how you like the weight difference.
