Last One Standing (LOS) event hosted by Santa Cruz 4 Wheel Drive Clu

On a sunny and surprisingly warm Saturday in December of 2011, a group of 21 individuals and approximately 75 additional spectators gathered together at Hollister Hills SVRA (State Vehicle Recreation Area) for the 3rd annual Last One Standing (LOS) event hosted by Santa Cruz 4 Wheel Drive Club. The LOS is a competition-style event that pits drivers of modified and stock 4×4 vehicles against each other and the clock to achieve the lowest time in several challenging off-road courses.  The event is open to club members and guests and has been one of the favored “runs” of the club’s monthly activities for the past 3 years.

‬It had been customary in the past for the SC4WDC to charge a $20 entry fee to guests that wish to participate in the club event.  This year the LOS organizer’s Eli Casey and Wade Leishman thought “outside of the box” of a way to generate more funds for the BRC, and so they decided to add a raffle to this year’s event.  SC4WDC reached out to over twenty vendors to drive this effort and secured the following prizes for the raffle:

Thanks to the generous donations by these vendors SC4WDC was able to sell approximately $900 in raffle tickets, and combined with this year’s guest entry fees, totaled $1100.00 raised by this event.

SC4WDC’s LOS event is organized into 5 separate timed events using the Hollister Hills SVRA man-made obstacle course. Each obstacle is scored and then all 5 scores are added together. The obstacles are:

  1. Stair steps and rock wash – a steep man-made section covered by cement and rocks to simulate a sheer granite wall, followed by traversing a narrow and rocky creek bed.
  2. The bumps – a section where the dirt is piled in large mounds that the driver must navigate through and back again at speed and within the course boundary.
  3. Teeter Totter – a mechanical device that is driven upon to check the balance of the vehicle.
  4. Blind driver’s challenge – the driver is blind-folded and is directed by the passenger through the old tire mud pit and after making a u-turn, must go back again to the start.
  5. The frame twister – a section with un-even ledges, drops and several large logs.

There are two winners determined each year, and they are awarded custom-made trophies created by SC4WDC organizers. One award goes to the highest scoring SC4WDC club member and the other is to the guest with the highest score. The 2011 SC4WDC Last One Standing winners were:  Rick Frier; overall highest score and SC4WDC member, and Jared Bishop; club guest and 3rd year participant. Additionally a small trophy and SC4WDC t-shirt was awarded to the person with the biggest “WOW” factor and best break, (ie; a crowd-pleasing feat or catastrophic failure) which was awarded to guest Scott Price for his near-rollover in the blindfold course and Big John for snapping the rear pinion on his rear Dana 44.

Next year, SC4WDC will be at it again and the event normally fills up fast, so if you’re interested in participating or donating to next year’s raffle, please contact SC4WDC at [email protected]
