Dynatek Dyna FS CDI
for the Grizzly 700 Review
Performance!
This is something the majority of ATV enthusiasts share in common. We strive for
better performance out of our ATV’s. We all want it and we all want to know how
to achieve a top performing machine.
A little over a year ago I sought
out on a quest to increase the performance on my Yamaha Grizzly 700. I equipped
it with a better flowing exhaust and air filter. This had required me to install
an aftermarket EFI fuel controller as well. All this entire combination created
and exceptional performing machine but there was definitely room for
improvement. It was much quicker off the line and mid and top end gains were
great as well. However it still lacked something and the newly added accessories
exposed some flaws in the Yamaha Grizzly 700’s EFI / Ignition system map.
Throttle response was just not what I would have expected with the aftermarket
performance add-ons. Plus, when the aftermarket exhaust was installed, a
“mid-range miss” was very pronounced.
It seemed that this miss was
haunting a lot of 700 Grizzly Owners who did similar exhaust upgrades. It was
such a mysterious anomaly that even Yamaha hadn’t heard of any complaints. It
seemed as if it was there on all of the Grizzly 700s, but was only audible when
an after-market exhaust, or even a “power tip” was put on the factory muffler.
Generally speaking, most people notice this miss somewhere between 20 and 30
mph. Well it didn’t appear to be hurting anything (other than performance), but
was basically just an annoyance. So, without the support from Yamaha on the
issue, we were forced to live with it. On top of the miss, it seemed that the
Grizzly 700 lacked just a little on the power side.
Well, that was until a company in
Glendora California answered our call.
Dynatek! The new fix for
everything was brought to my attention by one of the Review Crew members who
said this is something we need to look into.
I called Dynatek and began getting
as much information on the system they had developed. Everything they had to say
sounded very interesting and almost too good to be true sometimes as
apprehension began to set in that this could be another black box of “Voodoo
Magic”. But, the little angel or devil inside me kept saying “More speed!”,
“More power!” And I knew of Dynatek’s long standing, great record in aftermarket
performance coils, fuel controllers and ignition systems from my sport bike and
Harley Davidson days.
Dynatek customer service was
extraordinary. They managed to accurately answer all of my questions and
addressed all of my needs very professionally. In fact, they seemed very
passionate about this. Well….That was enough for me. It was time to test this
thing for myself.
The units arrived very quickly and
packaging was perfect. They even included a few decals for us as well. Quick
inspection of the unit and the instruction showed me that this was going to be a
breeze to install. Unfortunately this was the first hitch. The instructions that
accompanied the FS ignition did not match very well. But, the good news is that
the connectors would only go on one way. There were a few other discrepancies to
the installation instruction of the Dynatek. A quick call to Dynatek’s tech
support was able to clear this up. I will not go into the details since Dynatek
is most likely re-writing installation instruction as I type this review.
Installation took me about 45
minutes total start to finish. After making a few “sanity checks” and
re-connection of the battery it was time for a first test. 5-4-3-2-1….Ignition!
So far so good! I turned the ignition key on and with a clamp on amp meter to
note any extraordinary current spike that may be indicative to a short. Now it
was on to pushing the start button. As the Grizzlies’ spark plug ignited a
mixture of fuel and air the 700 Grizzly roared to life and with amazement the
first thing I noticed was how smooth the idle was. This was something I had not
had the privilege to experience since I began the exhaust and air box mods. The
Grizzly 700 always in my opinion had a slight stumble during idle. But, now,
after installing the Dynatek CDI box, idle is smooth, throttle response is
immediate, and the power band is as smooth and crisp as you would expect from a
fuel injected machine. On top of all that, Yamaha’s mid-range miss was
eliminated.
Without hesitation I quickly
donned my helmet and took it for a spin in my back yard. Wow! I could not help
but notice the immediate throttle response that the Dynatek FS Ignition
delivered. Just for giggles, I lined it up in my yard just right so I could see
if I could get the 700 Grizzly to bring the wheels off the ground in high range
again. I positioned myself in a normal riding posture, made sure everything in
my path way was clear and safe. I quickly stabbed the throttle till it bottomed
up and the front wheels began to rise and kept rising. I let off the throttle
and was astonished at the bottom end gain I had just gotten back.
Now, more excited than a 4 year
old waking up on Christmas morning, I could not wait to get to try this thing on
the trails. It was now off to the Hatfield and McCoy ATV trails located in
Southern WV. Here I decided I was going to throw everything I could think at
this little black box made by Dynatek. Steep mountains, fast straight trails,
and lots of mud holes.
We began testing the Ignition
system on a semi mudded Yamaha Grizzly 700. Acceleration was quick and snappy at
all levels of the power band. I suddenly felt a burning sensation in my
forearms. I was developing a workout trying to hold onto the Grizzly 700 now.
The only other times I had felt this sensation was when I had ridden some of the
Big Bore v-twins on the market. When approaching mud holes that were slightly
below certain uphill grades, a punch of the throttle would cause the Grizzly to
rare up on its rear wheels and wheelie right across these mud puddles. On the
straight haul roads I could quickly reach safe operating speed and beyond
without any problems. I won’t go into how fast I consider a safe riding speed,
but I think its fast enough for me while others say it's too fast.
My seat of the pants dyno told me
that this little black box that I labeled as “voodoo” wasn’t magic as all. It
was a true performance upgrade, which had made more overall improvement than any
performance upgrade to date.
In hindsight I really think the
Dynatek CDI is a great add-on. After comparing the before and after performance
I could not do with out one of these. Smooth idle and acceleration and
spectacular overall performance make the Dynatek CDI a top of the line
performance add on for the Yamaha Grizzly 700.
