Right after taking delivery of the Polaris Ranger RZR one of the first things I realized would need to be changed was the safety restraint system. The Polaris RZR uses a standard three point system like is found in automobiles. While this system would be effective in preventing you from flying through the windshield, it would be very ineffective in restraining you during a multiple rollover event.
We decided to search for a four point or five point restraint system for our RZR project. Several companies were on our list, but one company stood out for us. We contacted DJ Safety out of Los Angeles, California who specializes in safety equipment for the Motorsports and Powersports industry.
Being new to the side x side niche, I was truly lost in what I really needed to make sure everything went together properly. The staff at DJ Safety was extremely knowledgeable and knew exactly what I needed.
DJ Safety has a multitude of color choices to choose from. To show you the different setups we asked for an extra set on loan to install. Our final decision was black straps with red pads and a red anti-submarine restraint.
First Inspection
The restraints are very well built and meet or exceed the revised SFI 16-1 testing specifications.
Shipping from DJ Safety was extremely fast; even traveling from the west coast to the east coast. After arrival, we took a quick inventory, and with determination set forth our installation.
Installation
Installation is fairly straightforward for the RZR. You simply remove the Three point system and attach the 4 point DJ Safety restraints’ lap belt to the holes that the 3 point system was previously attached to with the included hardware. Then loop the shoulder restraints to the rear bar following the instructions provided by DJ Safety.
Installation of the Anti-Submarine belt does require drilling a hole into the RZR frames’ cross member under the seat. The total install time takes less that an hour and requires minimal hand tools.
Once the restraints are installed, you should go through and properly adjust the shoulder straps to fit properly. There are numerous sources available online on how to properly set up your restraints.
The DJ Safety restraints install easily by replacing the OEM seat belt locations.
The Ride
The restraints make a huge difference by holding you into the seat. While the anti-submarine strap and sternum buckle are optional, I would highly recommend them. The anti-submarine strap holds the lap belt down and prevents it from riding up when you snug the shoulder straps down. The sternum buckle allows you to loosen the shoulder restraints up when it is necessary to be able to move around in the cab for looking out to judge the terrain and such.
All in all the DJ Safety system was a top of the line product for our Project RZR. We felt that the system gave us an additional level of confidence in most riding situations. We are also certain that we are much safer now than we were with the 3 point OEM system.
We are very happy with the restraints and color combinations that DJ Safety provided us. The black webbing with red shoulder pads give us a very custom look for out RZR.
Conclusion
With everything installed and properly adjusted the DJ Safety buggy restraints will provide you with the best possible safety restraint for your RZR or other UTV.
The quality buckles, webbing and close attention to detail set a new standard in offroad vehicle safety. We hope to never have to rely on the DJ Safety restraints, but it’s nice to have the assurance that you have equipment which you can depend on in the event that you are involved in an impact or vehicle rollover.

This should be standard equipment in all UTV's designed for all play and no work, like the Polaris Razer.
One day they will be standard from the factory.
Yep, I can't believ that they dont come equipped with them now. Seems like it would make thing 100% safer. I surely wouldnt cost that much more than the silly seatbelts it comes with now.

Changes are coming for sure as the goverment is looking at regulating the safety standards on these vehicles a little bit more.
I welcome four or five point harnesses as a standard with a proper fitting seat. I feel more secure when driving aggressivly. Plus there is no way you are coming out of a five point harness in a rollover if you wear it correctly and it was installed correctly.
