Bear in mind that in a tactical situation the surefire lights mounted to your weapon are not the best idea. They sometimes present a disadvantage to you by revealing your direct location. This may never be the case when confronted by would be home invader, but some pros are trained to aim to take out the light.

They are a handy addition and in most cases give you a tactical advantage. I have a surefire mounted to my carbine, one I carry as a standalone for CCW and one in my BO kit.

I agree that the light is only effective in certian situations. The best situation I can think of would be clearing rooms in the dark without the aid of NVGs. Also, if the operator is properly trained on the use of the light it is much more effective. In other words it is bad practice to the use the light as a visual aid rather than to deploy the light suddenly in the targets eyes.

The ultimate light is an IRL with NVGs. The average fella can't afford that technology and probably doesn't have a need for it. You won't have time to deploy NVGs in a home emergency.
