Hunting, Fishing & the OutdoorsGot a story about the "BIG" one that got away?
There are as many choices for a deer rifle as there cars to buy. BUT, there are a few that have seemed to etch their way into the hearts and homes of nearly every deer hunter. Go ahead and cast a vote for your favorite All-Round deer rifle. Remember, we know there are larger, farther shooting, harder hitting rifles out there. These are just the all time classics that we are focusing on. Feel free to elaborate on why you voted for your choice.
If I have missed something let me know and I'll try to add it in there.
Well Battlegun although I have many firearms of different calibres and gauges it always seems I go back to my all time sentimental favourite 30-30 Winchester . Even the action is sloppy on this lever action when you compare it to a Marlin say but boy without wanting to brag I can and have made some amazing witnessed shots with my old winny which I bought new almost 33 years ago . Even head shooting grouse while they are walking on the ground is not beyond it or me and yes I shoot with open sights . I sighted this gun in that many years ago and although it gets checked yearly I have never touched the sights since and she keeps on dropping the deer .
The stock is not pretty anymore although I could make it so,,, but this gives her character and just goes along with the wrinkles and gray hairs I now have after many seasons of travels through thick bush that you might have to crawl through .
The memories of past travels bring teers to my eyes but my finger is starting to twitch in anticipation of carrying her for another one . She will be oiled and ready for duty .

One of the biggest mistakes I've ever made was selling my Winchester 30-30. Great gun indeed.
Ah, the subject of weaponry .... a subject I love ... next to trucks ... or Blondes & Brunettes ... or maybe big .... ones ..... or ones smaller than a handful ....
Getting back to the subject of cold steel .... since you didn't put the 7MM or the 338 on the list, you have three weapons that can do it all. The old but dependable 30-30. I use to own one & loved it ... & like Trapperdirk wrote, it could take a beating & was always ready to take game.
The 270 ... fun rifle ... fast shooting, doesn't kick to bad ... but a little lite for Elk or Moose ... but has brought both down. Any weapon in the hands of an experienced owner is a deadly weapon ... Savvy ??
So, I choose the favorite as the 30.06. Fast, flat shooting, ammo's easy to find ... in almost any small town or hunting camp .... should one need more due to plink'in or tak'in the heads off Pine Chickens, instead of wait'in for the "Big Buck" too come by. With the 30.06, you also have a wide selection of different bullet weights if you reload. Lite fast bullets (110 gr or liter) for small game, or heavier bullets (200+ gr) for large heavy game with thick hides .... like Moose & Bear.
But I'm sure there is someone who's favorite weapon is one of the others listed, like Trapperdirk & his faithful 30-30.
Dang, I need to go oil the bad boy & check out the 12ga ... chicken season has started !!!! ... Let the feathers fly !!!!
Later ...

You know Gunny that 30-06 is one that knecks down TO .270 and even .243 etc and will just about take anything in its track and WILL if North American game . 30-06 killed most for many folks I guided for and an all round round that covers many grains . Godd choice as is the 308 .
I'll tell all . The winny I brag about is a pain in the arse cause shes not a clip loader .It's a tubular magazine and ejecting after loading is not a quality too look for in a gun these days . LOL Shall I explain why because I will although this rifle has done much . I'll do a review unbiased but it would not be fair . She's just a gun that harvests for personal meat for us and my family .
And yes I agree any round tied to the 30-06 as in 3.08 is great round including those knecked down from it . They just get faster knecked down and as a hunter its not about speed just to l get the animal down ASAP . its not about killing nor is there a joy in the death of any of mothers natures creatures . Its all about the REAL MEAT and smelling the frost for me . true story .

Ah Trapperdirk ... I love the bush myself .... nothing like the smell of a fresh ...... Wait ... we're talk'in weapons here huh ??
Alrighty then .... yes, the 30.06 can be necked down to other calibers .... however, we're talk'in, or Battlegun is, One Caliber, One Weapon, as the best all-around. So, I'll stand by the 30.06 as the one rifle to have ...... but as I write that ..... I sure miss my 30-30 ..... and then we could even get into varmit rifles ..... Oh, this thread could go on forever !!!
And I myself ain't into the kill'in per-say .... I just want to make a clean shot, so the animal that The Big Guy upstairs provided for us, & Good Ole Mother Nature has watched over, feels as little pain as possible. And I give thanks always, to that which is provided for us to partake of.
Good one Battlegun .....
Damn ... I think I've had to much sugar today ......
