the 09 rene and earlier models have a 450w magneto. The batteries are minimal sized. The winch, under load draws an astronomical amount of current and will drop the battery voltage in a blink.

Can AM's ecu has set points that are to remind you that you are depleting the battery, thus the light.

I have found that placing the quad in neutral and revving the engine up to 3k-3500 rpms will reduce this. When pulling someone else out, I tighten the line with the winch, then use the quad in reverse to pull them out, minimizing the use of the winch under load.

Also, I read somewhere that the can am will not provide a sufficient charge until about 4500 rpm's - not sure where.

I've also read the 4500rpm charge too. One of the downfalls to the quad I guess. On the flip, I've heard of someone who makes a replacement altenator or stator for them. Wish I could remember who now

How long are you running the winch at idle? If I am pulling somebody more than 10-15 seconds, I put it in park, sit on it so it doesn't drag my quad and rev to around 3000ish.

I've never had a limp home light doing that. The magneto is the problem which they fixed on the 2010 Xxc with the 650 watt magneto.

It is not recommended to use the quad in reverse to pull somone out b/c it is suppose to be bad on teh internals of the winch. However, I have done that myself in a needed situation with a heavily stuck side by side that I had to get out.

There are some replacement batteries that some folks are running that seem to not have a limp home problem.

I don't know if they have a more of a deap cycle charge than the stock one does. But, when it comes time to replace mine, I may go with that one for some mental insurance.
