Dalton kit for Outlander 500

Hey all,

I'm new to this forum and finally getting around to my first post. I'm on a couple other forums but just stumbled upon this one and joined up.

It seems like there are a few of you on here that are really happy with the results you got from your Dalton clutch kits. So I want to ask your opinion on the following:

I have a bone stock 2008 Outlander 500XT and have been debating on doing some simple mods to it. Obviously, the Dalton clutch springs are on my list since I'm posting about it. My question is this; with stock sized tires and no other mods what do you think the felt effects of adding the Dalton springs will be on my 500? Will it be snappier? Quicker off the line? Will the engine power feel more connected to the throttle and wheels? By the way I live in Michigan so there are no altitude issues to think about.

It just seems like if the clutch kits make up for bigger tires, it would really give it some snap with stock sized tires. And that's just what I'm looking for. It seems too easy and affordable to not do it.

Any advice? Thanks a lot!

Eric

Hey Eric, and welcome to the site. You do not have to hav other mods to do the clutch kit. On my Renegade, I am running stock SIZE tires, but they are terracrosses, 25 inch.

I noticed a lot of improvement when I put mine on. However, I am now about to really step it up a notch with clutch work. My primary and secondary sheaves are about to be shipped out to have the angles changed, the faces resurfaced for better belt grip and the weighting changed for optimum shiftout and power.

Have you read the Dalton review that I did for the Renegade and the one that Battlegun did for the Outlander 800?

The only mod I had done until last night performancewise was a slip on pipe. I will tell you that mine continuously impresses people how much it blows them away on a drag race. The low and mid range improvements are drastic and when the shift out occurs in the mid-range, it is like a missle.

I say go for it and don't look back.

Thakns B-Dubya.

I was getting lukewarm responses on some other forums and almost had myself talked out of it. According to the Dalton site the 500 OUtlander springs are less than $80. So I guess I'm not out much if I give it a try and end up not liking it. But it sure sounds like it will give the 500 a real seat-of-the-pants improvement.

I did read the write-ups you guys did and was encouraged by it. I watched the videos and it looks pretty straigthforward to install. To just do the springs it looks like there is no clutch disassembly other than remofing the outer sheives from both clutches. Place the new springs in there and button it back up.

Not sure if I'll do this right away, but it's going on the to-do list for sure.

Thanks again, and I'll be sure to throw out any other questions I might have to this forum! Good info here.

You're very welcome. I know the 800's have weights that go along with it but only a primary spring wheras the 500 setup has no weights but both springs. I Think you will still be very happy. I read on Dalton's site a couple of times over that the 500 setup was for larger tires, which means that kit will be compensating for the larger tire setup power loss. you could potentially be more impressed than we were if you are keeping stock tire size as you said.

You should probably expect clutch engagement to be at a higher RPM as ours is but you should be OK. It may not be a bad idea to give Dalton a buzz and see what they recommend to you with stock size tires.
