Post BRP recalls 2010 Can-Am Outlander and Renegade models

BRP recalls 2010 Can-Am Outlander and Renegade models

Bombardier Recreational Products (BRP), in cooperation with the Consumer Product Safety Commission, is conducting a voluntary recall of certain 2010 Can-Am Outlander and RenegadeATV models equipped with Dynamic Power Steering.

According to BRP, an electrical short circuit to ground of the DPS may occur. This can cause your vehicle to suddenly steer left on its own and in some situations the operator could lose control of the vehicle.

So far the CPSC has received one incident report, but no injuries or material damage was reported. About 2,400 units are affected by the recall. These units were sold throughout Canada and the United States from August, 2009 through November 2009 for between $6,800 and $13,500.

BRP has already sent by mail a Safety Recall Notice to all known registered owners of these vehicles. This letter urges the owners to contact their authorized BRP Can-Am ATV dealer to have their vehicle repaired.

Consumers are asked to stop using the affected units immediately. New DPS software is expected to be available in the coming days. Should consumers wish to continue using the ATVs, BRP asks that they disable the DPS by removing the DPS electrical fuse.

For additional information, call BRP toll-free at (88 638-5397 or visit the firm’s Web site at Can-Am.BRP.com.

Thinking Ahead ?

I can't beleive an ATV manufacturer as technologically advanced as Can-Am wouldn't put more test hours on the DPS system to get out all the glitches before bringing it to their line-up. Well I guess everyones allowed at least one F*** up. Also they were a little behind all other manufacturers with DPS so I suppose they were somewhat pressed for time, but that no excuse. On second thought if you look at everything Can-Am has done so far it's like everything was planed years in advance so why wasn't the DPS? WHO KNOWZZZZ ?

From my view point, BRP may be horse power wizards, but they are electrical idiots. Look at their charging systems. I would have to say that when a person pays that kind of doe for a quad they would like to think they have the best there is. Hah! They've got the power. I'll give them that.

On the flip. Crap happens. Even the almighty Yamaha had some issues with their EPS when it first came out. I don't think it involved a recall though.

What was the Yamaha problem? I don't recall it had any. There were some instances with water getting into the unit from the vent line and freezing. But most from which I can recall were from abuse.

Can Am was in a hurry to release an option which was wanted. Yamaha has cornered that market for 3 years.

And yes, they do some silly things with their electronics. Look at the charging system.
