Get the 800, especially if you are going to run 27" tires. The 800 has "just enough" beans, but is still very easy to finesse through the technically difficult terrain.

I agree with 3tv. Although the 800 has more juice, that is only controlled by your willing finger. It can be as nimble as you want but has all the power you can require of it, especially if you wanna put big tires. If you're worried the smaller engine may not be enough in the long run, epscially with 27" tires, the 800 is the only answer.

0-oh crap in a blink

I have hit 77mph on my 08 and it was pretty scary. If you get the 800, twist in the throttle stop before you let dad test ride it.....

I'll side with everyone here. Go for the 800 and negotiate down if neccesary. The comment on the throttle stop should be taken seriously. These things are a beast. If you're going to put 27" tires on it, consider a Dalton Clutch Kit.

I fear you would find yourself wondering/wishing about the power of the 800 if you had the 500. I'm not talking bad about the 500. They are fine for people who know their limits and never plan on exceeding or increasing that expectation. That doesn't sound like you.
