How is this for a deal?
Went to the local Can Am dealership here in Cedar City today. Told them I wanted a 2010 Renegade 800X xc, and asked them how much it would be if I traded in my 2009 Renegade 800R. Turns out they would pay me $5400 for my ATV, and they would sell me the new Can Am for $14,700 OTD. Only $9300 difference. This was their best offer, after considerable time haggling.
How would you take that? I'm thinking either; A) they don't want business, and this is their semi polite way of telling someone to take a hike, or B) they really think they can gouge people like that, and people wont care.
I don't know what to do. The local places are hurting bad with the economy right now, and I've been trying to support the local businesses for years now. I bought my 2009 Can Am at this dealership, and I bought my Yamaha FZ-1 at this dealership just two months ago. But now instead of being someone that is doing their best to support the local business I am someone that doesn't plan on going back again, ... perhaps ever. The sooner they go out of business, the sooner we have the chance to get a better dealership is kind of what I'm thinking.
Later on the same day I drove 50 miles with my Can Am in the back of my truck to the next closest dealer and got a price that was $3800 better. Still not good enough, but getting closer. I figure any place that is charging $3800 more than their closest competition is gouging you pretty deep.

Wow, I guess I am not that surprised really as we have the same mindset here as well. I really cannot understand the ideology behind screwing your repeat customers. I constantly see the local dealerships forcing people to drive 50-80 miles away because they refuse to cut the customer a deal because they are lazy and would rather sell one quad a month and make a 500 dollar commission vs. selling 3 quads a month and make a 1000 dollar commission and possibly earn the customers respect and repeat sales on other items including accessories and service.
Maybe I am over thinking the marketing strategy, but know successful dealerships who have the latter strategy min set and they are very successful, even during these economic times.

i'd try and sell your Renegade privately. Then go beat down the dealers. I have found when trading they tend to raise the price a bit and then never want to give you crap on your trade in. They just dont want used bikes.

If you want to trade-in, make the deal WITHOUT the trade-in being a factor. THEN after they have given you their best offer without the trade, throw the trade at them. This forces their prices out in the open and they can not possibly "try" to cover a crappy a deal. Not that the prices you were offered were easy to hide as crappy! Man that really blows. The previous is an old trick to the trade that I was let in on, but I've never used it. Sounds to me maybe you were a bit passive with the dealership. Having purchased at least two previous vehicles from them I would laughed out loud in their face and said "let me speak to the owner so I can verify this offer". If that was the owner, I would laughed in his face and said "you won't gouge me like that and you will never sell me anything again".
Closing remark: Weren't you one of the fellows bashing the crap out of the new 2010's with "ugly" comments and stupid gas tank etc? Change of heart? I'm not picking on you, I'm just curious as to why you are now considering one of the quads you previously were not interested in.

It is ugly, and I still think it looks like a school bus. The smaller gas tank is stupid, but PRM makes an excellent rack that can carry two one gallon gas cans, plus a cooler, and that would extend my fuel range farther than the 2009 I have now. Power steering is the main reason, because it would be nice for the slow technical trails I ride, and that combined with the adjustability of the suspension would make it worth putting up with the hideous color scheme. I'm thinking I'll just keep what I have for at least another year though.
This wasn't a "I'm looking for a new quad" post, it was an "OMG, you wouldn't believe how bad the local dealer trys to rip people off" post. I couldn't believe a salesperson could present an offer like that to someone, and keep a straight face while they were doing it. The offer was so bad that I was just shocked, and thought I would share the experience.

Fair enough. I was just curious. I agree that was a really piss-poor effort at selling a quad.

Sad thing about this is it seems to be every where. We have a dealership here that is just the same. And I have spent plenty with them, but, I now spend that same elsewhere. I've bought 4 new toys in the last year and a half, but none from them. I always make it a point to let them know to.

3TV ... I was conversing (like how I'm into big words now ?) with a guy from down South in Alabama (is that spelled right ??) ... he's gett'in a 2010 Can-Am ... & it's cost'in him $14K plus, out the door ..... and not only was he shocked & upset .... he said it would be the last ATV he bought because of the price. ... but he is gonna pay that price for this one .......
There was a fellow worker who just bought an brand new 08 Grizzly 700 ... he shopped around with all the local dealers up North here .... he wanted go back to the dealer he bought his first two quads with .... but that dealer wanted $2500 more than a dealer over by my house.
So, I don't know how some dealers expect to stay in business .... and compete against those that are do'in there best to attract new customers ??
14 grand for an ATV to me ...... is WAY to much ..... but I'm a poor work'in man .......
Later ....

A wise man once said
I'm a poor working man myself (poor since I bought the 800) But My Grandfather told me once he'd rather pay for what he really wants rather than save money and have somthing he wasn't completally sadisfied with. I AGREE

Don't let 3TV fool ya. He has more motor vehicles than I have pairs of underwear.
He who dies with the most toys wins right!
