what's the bung in the Renegade muffler for?

I noticed today for the first time that the stock muffler on my 09 has some type of bung plug in it. Does anyone know what it is intended for? It looks like an 02 sensor could plug into it but most 02 sensor companies don't recommend mounting them pointing in an upward position since they could puddle condensation in them causing the sensor to fail.

Any ideas?

Thanks!

Buster

My Outlander has one too. I assumed it was a drain plug to let water out when you sink them.

It is a purge hole to blow the carbon buildup from your exhaust. You are supposed to take the bung plug out and cover the exhaust port of the exhaust and give it a few quick blasts of the throttle. This is supposed to blow the carbon buildup from the exhaust system.

I have done it. So I cannot claim it's usefulness.

Yep, that was the info I found after this post. I have NOT however found any info as to the recommended frequency.

Thanks!

The owner's manual refers to it as a cleanout plug but I don't see that in the service manual. Page 95 of the owner's manual describes the procedure but doesn't mention frequency at all.
