Moose Receiver Hitch & Receiver

Photo attached. I just put this hitch on. I'm not real sure how it's gonna work out. Anyone have any experience with a hitch like this?

Does it only have one bolt attaching it to the Can-Am hitch mount? If so, that ain't good as with enough force it could cause it to either swivel around on you which would be very dangerous. It could also allow it to bend down the back of the ca-am hitch mount. Just my though.

I had thought about welding piece of square steel on the top of mine so it will take a full sized receiver. The one can-am sells for a receiver mount will only take one of those dinky 1 1/2 inch receivers which is why I didn't waste the money on it.

Well Buster, I'm glad you opened this up. I wasn't going to right of the bat. You are correct there is only the one bolt connecting the receiver to the ATV. I did not like this idea at all, but was out of options. And like you said, the BRP receiver is smaller. I need 2" to be functional. (save the comments fellas.)

You hit the nail right on the head though with what I was thinking. I want to weld the the hitch to the atv to prevent that slipage you were talking about. Not only is that danerous, but just a pain the arse. With the frame design of the Outty and Gade, I'm not sure there any other options. Oh yeah. When I weld that baby to the ATV, it will eliminate the holding bolt which will allow a standard 2" truck receiver hitch to fit in there. Other wise I would have had to cut one down to size nor will I have to buy spares.

Another note worth mentioning is that the holes on the hitch are notably small. I measured my ball bolt from my truck hitch and it was a 1" Diameter bolt. The hole on the Moose Hitch is around 3/4". I'm not sure if you can buy a 2" ball with a 3/4" bolt

The bottom line is, IMHO, without some seriousl modifications, this hitch will be dangerous and combersome. However, I have not tested it. I will do that before I make any changes. Another defensive statement would be, this is an ATV, not a work truck. After using an impact wrench to secure the receiver it should take some serious pressure (like that not recommended by the manufacturer) to move it. It has a star washer between the two to create a bite and eliminate or minimize movement.

Well, as I said, too much pressure will cause the hitch to fail (or just move). I know the weight I was pulling was beyond the manufacturers recommendations so I can't bash Moose. (I like moose products anyway). With regular ATV Impliments the hitch would do just fine.

But me, not wanting to play by the rules, welded the receiver to the outty to create a more stable platform. It pulled my 6x12 trailer really good. (I will only do this around the yard and what not. Never on the roads etc.

I'm pretty sure that is the weight of the trailer or an illusion. There is no good explanation for it to be running down hill unless I bent the platform.

I'll go visually inspect afterwhile.

BG, I found, up here in Canada, a hitch place that had a 2" ball with a screw in bolt from the bottom that went right thru the tiny BRP hole in the hitch plate. That being said, (it looks to me like i have the same (or close to) trailer as you) my problem is clearance behind the Gade. as in I dont have any... the trailer jack that is welded in place wants to take out my brake light, so this is a real option for me, Thanks! I'm not going to be pulling tractors, cars or anything else that would be way, way stupid, but this is a quick fix for me, and would eliminate the tail light smashed in problem.

I've used this set up frequently and it is still working fine. I have also determined that I should have used a spacer of some sort under the front part of the hitch and run a complete bead of weld around it. This would have elminated the downward angle thing. Oh well. Hind sight is 20/20. As I said though. I have used it often and no problems at all.

Yeah! I wonder what's the reason why there is only one bolt connecting to the receiver to the ATV. It shouldn't be done that way. You better go to a detailer and let it fix for you.
